It's definitely a weaker era, but there are still worthwhile divisions and fighters to watch. Light heavyweight is very exciting with Bivol, Beterbiev, and Benavidez (assuming he comes back down). The lighter weight classes still put on good fights, too. Really the big problem is that the best don't fight the best nearly often enough. That would not only bring more eyeballs to the sport but also raise the skill level of fighters as a whole. Iron sharpens iron. Fighters who refuse to challenge themselves won't face the difficulties that forces them to reach new levels of greatness. We need more fighters who want to be great and are willing to prove it. There's something innate in human beings that are interested in violent competition. If you put on good fights, people will watch.
I've been following boxing for a long time, and I see more talent now than ever before, mainly because the sport has become more international during the past 20 years. That being said, it could be much better if: 1) the top boxers would fight more often, at least three times a year, and 2) if American and British promoters would not "freeze out" boxers from other parts of the world.
Cruiserweight sucks. A guy that got flat lined 3 fights ago is one win away from another world title shot he's only fought 14 times. Tszyu and six Spence none the richer are also one win away from a world title shot. One has been bashed in 2 world titles, his 3rd and quit on his stool. The other hasn't fought in 3 years. Jermell Charlo is making a come back 3 years later also and looks terrible. 50 year old mayweather making a return 11 years out the game. The sport of boxing has been down a downward spiral for 3 years. GGG coming back, Canelo declining and tank and Crawford retiring. It's all about money. Not the real fights.
Yeah yeah and when you were a kid y’all had to walk to school in the snow, uphill, both ways, backwards, right? we just had two Japanese generational talents in their prime have a superfight that was close enough that there will be a rematch, giving sufficient time for the American generational talent to grow into 118/122 and challenge the winner. And that American is young, exciting to watch, and not an asshat. we also just had two American generational talents in their prime have a superfight that showed that, eh, actually there’s only one American generational talent in that weight range. And that American is young and not an asshat. He ain’t the best watch in the moment, but he’s amazing in slow-motion clips, and he’s kind of funny in press conferences. meanwhile, we have an interesting Arab-Brit who is about to fight for a title in front of the great pyramid. That’s kind of cool. Oh and there’s a nonsense HW title defense going on after. Ok, so, also, we have a Mexican-American who just moved up from 175 to 200 and looked better than ever, made a world champ who has never even been knocked down before quit. And he’s going to fight the Russian for undisputed next. Can we get the Cold War going again for this one? we have an all Brit HW title fight that just happened and was nuts, and the rematch is already confirmed. oh, did I forget that we have a young Brit who may be the biggest HW talent since, I don’t know, Muhammad Ali? Yeah, he’s kicking around, going to fight a solid Croat to prove he’s ready for anyone, and then is going to wreck the entire HW division in spectacular fashion. Oh, he’s going to. there’s a ton going on right now. But yeah yeah back in the 90s champs fought 2-3 cab drivers between each real fight. Meanwhile the Croat did just that last weekend and everybody groaned about it.
access has never been easier. Pay your monthly fee for DAZN, or wait until the next day and watch it on YouTube for free. In the 90s, you had to pay for HBO if you wanted the fights. And there was no next day viewing for free. just saying.
Lots of heavyweights have wasted the majority of their careers on completely pointless fights. That was a lot less common prior to the 1990s Hrgovic should have a much better resume by this stage and obviously he should never have faced Allen
