Peter Fury showed himself as an elite trainer. To get Rico to that level in a boxing ring is insane.

 

All time greats are allowed to age overnight and it’s cliche but Father Time is undefeated. I’ve posted elsewhere that Usyk look so soft physically and that the normal foot feints, level changes, active guard and movement from the waist was vastly diminished.. even his signature angle exits were reduced to straight lines BUT a box he did tick was coming from behind on his absolute worst night, biting down and forcing a stoppage (when that’s against his entire style). I hope he looks back, like Lennox after Vitali and realises the mileage is now on the clock. Last night he did what an ATG does.

 

Looking at the official cards rico was about to get shafted anyway had he survived the last round.

Terrible stoppage but he was always likely to be robbed so at the end it probably made no difference.

To be fair to usyk though he did what he always does makes the other guy work until he tires himself out then takes over it just happened way later than normal and nearly ran out of time, he got out of jail with one shot in the end. It had shades of the bellew fight except rico didnt read the script he was supposed to tire a few rounds earlier.

It was 95-95 95-95 96-94 (Rico) after 10 Rounds.

The 10-8 to Usyk in the 11th had it ended and been scored would have then read as 105-103 105-103 104-104 in favour of Usyk.

My main gripe is when Boxers, at HW, come in at their career heaviest weight when all of their success has been a few LBs lighter. Always causes me concern.

I agree at the lighter weights when it gets tight making weight that they move up from 130-135, 135-140, 140-147 as a few examples.

As with Ngannou who had a very similar close 1st fight with Fury, it will be interesting how Rico adapts - or how Boxers adapt as AJ did v Ngannou - to Rico's next fight.

Sounds like Rico gave it a really good go. Off to watch the highlights.

 

So I made the mistake of tuning out after the Hamzah fight thinking Rico would be about as competitive as Begic. Fair play to Verhoeven though, he just showed the best of British heavyweights up last night.

Kind of mad that it took a 1-0 kickboxer to show standing off and trying to outbox Usyk is pretty futile. If you’ve got the size, back him up, rough him up a bit and make him uncomfortable, you might actually give yourself a shot.

As others have said, the scorecards probably meant he was never getting the win regardless, but yet another bloke who’s completely tore up the rulebook and made a mockery of the experts and the sport.

 

Especially when you rely on movement like Usyk.
