I think what happened was a combination of things. Rico is a very tough strong man and even more importantly he was extremely well prepared for this fight. However very surprisingly to me Usyk made the same mistake Fury did and underestimated his cross-over opponent. He looked soft and seemed lethargic but like the champion he is he was able to finally hurt Rico when Rico finally got tired. The stoppage looked premature but I'm sure Usyk would have gotten rid of him in the last round but it's not 100% certain. My take-away from this fight is that Usyk needs to retire now! Kabayel is a huge threat to him among others.

Rico spits the mouthguard out to buy time then Peter Fury fumbled putting back in to buy more time. Where's the whining about that? Rico was badly hurt, and it's doubtful he'd have seen the final bell in the 12th.

Probably, yeah, but Ali was completely finished by his mid-30s because he had been in so many gruelling wars. Ali would not have struggled with Rico in his 25th fight, let's put it that way instead. Usyk is arguably the GOAT at cruiserweight, but his HW prowess has always been laughably overblown, and this fight highlights that pretty clearly.

Can you imagine if this had happened to Canelo? The mockery.

Usyk has established his dominance over the totality of heavyweight boxing; if he was "exposed" here, then you have to accept by proxy that the entirety of heavyweight boxing, or perhaps the sport as a whole, has been exposed too. In reality a underprepared Usyk was pushed to the limit by a grossly underestimated Rico; the Verhoeven that fought tonight would beat many of the heavyweight contenders, and for me the only takeaway from tonights action is that prowess in a boxing adjacent discipline can transcend rulebooks to translate to prowess in a boxing ring.

Complete nonsense, Rico looked great until he didn't, that's the way the cookie crumbles. Stopped prematurely? Yeah for sure, he was about to topple regardless. Round scoring doesn't matter if you get stopped, that's just the way it is.

Usyk had 356 3-5 round fights before he even started his pro career, to Ali's 100-ish. Usyk's legs are gone, yet he pulled it out of the bag where other champions would have lost. Find me a Ring HW champ older than Usyk who successfully defended his title against anyone.

Usyk hasn't started his cycle for Kabayel that's why he looked bad

    Hard truths.

Yeah I saw it when he fought Briedis. Everytime Briedis pressed the action he was having his best moments and he had Usyk on the ropes a few times dictating the flow.

I always thought Mike Tyson and Frazier were bad match ups for Usyk

It wasn't a good stoppage, he might have pulled it out in the 12th, but the fact we were 3 minutes away from a 1-0 ex-kickboxer getting his hands on the WBC belt is one of the lowest points the heavyweight division has ever witnessed. You can cut it anyway you like, but with a single digit number of fighters at HW, multiple rematches, and now going life and death with a kickboxer, I'm not buying into any idea that Usyk is anywhere near the GOAT HW discussion, cruiserweight is a different matter entirely.

Well Canelo does have a history of cheating and corruption where Usyk has always been an all around good guy.

Almost all of them were 3 rounds besides a select few 5 rounds. 12 round fights and 15 rounds fights are in a completely different stratosphere of brain damage and wear and tear especially as most get more hittable as the fight goes on. Ali was also way more active annually
