Should Usyk hang the gloves up?

He could do better next time but I think this would be a great time.

If he doesn't, I won't feel too bad if he losses one. This was a warning.

 

Dancing around like a dickhead on YouTube making weird noises showed his true character. He lost that fight. Even he knows it.

 

It's disappointing when great fighters have the perfect storybook ending to close their career, and, for whatever reason, they just don't take it. Pacquiao's win over Thurman is another example. Knocking out Dubois with the perfect sweeping left counter. It just doesn't get much better than that. Yeah, Usyk looked good in that fight, but he was clearly at the age where a massive decline was just right around the corner. Nothing he could possibly do at that point was going to substantially improve his legacy, only maybe detract from it. Maybe he was just trying to cash in with a few more lucrative paydays. But that greed (if you want to call it that) can have consequences.

 

It's a lot more complex than that, him getting old overnight can be a part of the reason for that performance, he is approaching 40 after all and has taken some damage at HW. There's many other considerations that can only be answered by seeing him out again. His resume is an all time great one and he's made bags of money so you would like to see him sail off as soon as he looks like he's slipping and vulnerable. If we saw Verhoeven again competing with a top 15 guy we can also find more out.

 

He's 39, cleared out the best fighters of his era and based on him taking the Verhoeven fight in the first place, clearly isn't motivated anymore, otherwise he would have fought one of the next gen of top contenders like Kabayel. Question is can he find that fire that desire again that was missing for this fight.

This kind of reminds me of when Lennox struggled badly with Vitali, he had planned to fight a pointless fight against Kirk Johnson while waiting to cash out with a 2nd Tyson fight and that scare was enough to convince Lennox he no longer had the desire to really put the work in to remain on top. Usyk should take note, ask himself if he is willing to put the same level of focus and commitment to the sport he once did, if he cannot, then he should retire.

The difference is, Vitali was a great boxer, Rico is a novice kickboxer, embarrassing for Usyk this.

 

We were applauding Mayweather and Pacquiao for their insane longevity and consistency at being astonishingly elite well into their 30's so we should celebrate that from Usyk.

 

As much as I love Usyk, yes he should, if there was not some other reason he looked so shitty in there (like if he had the flu or smth) he should call it quits

 

I get the feeling Usyk will walk away if he senses that he's losing that edge, you would think his team would be straight with him too. Some fighters know when it's time and leave the game, some need it beaten out of them until they understand. In other sports you can hang around a lot longer you'll just drop down in the rankings as your athleticism and sharpness decrease. The margins are brutal in a sport like boxing, that's why we witness such dramatic declines in one fight, the consequences slam down like a guillotine if you have lost enough between fights for whatever reason.

 

Yes, he should retire to the benefit of everyone. Retire on top, and stop holding the belts hostage when he clearly has no intention of facing his mandatory challengers

 

Usyk needs to fight his ordered mandatory Kabayel and try to put right the damage from last night,that performance last night has put a black eye on Usyk’s career ! Should he take the Kabayel fight and win he has redeemed himself in my eyes then needs to retire,should he lose the Kabayel fight then people will say that’s why he went after Rico all along and not Kabayel. No waiting six months for a decision either to see what he is doing,the Division has been held up long enough ! Should Usyk not fight Kabayel this will be another stain on his legacy .

 

It's whether he feels slighted by the perception he's lost some respect from that performance and wants to put it right and Turki has said he wants to see that again and will no doubt put the cash up as soon as feasible. Kabayel has earned his title shot, there's no way any belt should be on the line for a Verhoeven rematch. So he can give up the belts and rematch RV or fight a tough outing in Kabayel and try to build on his legacy defeating a good contender. Does that really motivate him though, maybe the Verhoeven test and fallout gives him a much greater purpose. He did say he only has three fights left, maybe the landscape opens up and winning belts back after that rematch is more exciting?
