The referee did no favours for Usyk or Rico

Usyk was denied a chance at scoring a more convincing/emphatic stoppage.

Rico was denied a chance of going out on his shield on his terms which would've gave the fight a better more conclusive ending.

This has just created unnecessary drama/controversy which has hurt boxings reputation overall.

Yes even if Usyk would've scored a 12th round emphatic stoppage people would've still criticised the performance which is fine.

But atleast there would've been no drama no controversy and you could chalk it off to a bad night at the office and Usyk could move on.

But the issue is Usyk is kind of forced now to take this rematch vs Rico because its too much of a talking point all around the world.

And this why you don't have these crossover fights I don't think they are ever good for boxings reputation.

He either takes Kabayel on and then rematches Verhoeven hopefully after he beats a top 15 guy between, or he rematches Verhoeven and drops the belts then fights to regain a belt. His career can go in an unexpectedly more interesting direction after this and add more to his story than if he just dusted a no hoper kickboxer in four rounds.

Why did Fury not rematch Ngannou? To me that was far worse than what happened to Usyk.

Anything less than rendering Ngannou unconscious in two rounds would be seen as a poor showing and the financial interest had evaporated so it turned into a lose lose. He complimented Ngannou and said he tried his best but didn’t have a good night and moved on and gave Usyk two great fights.

Bro cmon, Usyk has too many rematches. It's a waste of time that Usyk doesn't have

Referees are trained not to think about that kind of discretion. They have way too much going on to worry about that.

Rules are to be applied by the book only which is the fairest contest for everyone. You could argue allowing extra credit to Rico would have unfairly disadvantaged Usyk, who was landing the required amount of unanswered shots after a knockdown.

The referee is in a far worse situation if he/she wants to begin dictating outcomes in the ring.... FFS...

As for the clock, the referee only looks at the clock as it applies to the rules. Not to how it might be "seen" by the crowd, corners, promoters or who it advantages/disadvantages.... etc

What is the actual rule for spitting out a mouthpiece? Whenever I’ve seen it after a knockdown they get a point taken off but I read the ref can either just warn them or even disqualify them. Didn’t Corrales literally do it on two separate occasions as the ref was counting to buy the most time and he was allowed to carry on. Shows the ref that you have the faculties to do that still so should work in your favour in exchange for taking points.

    It's a little bit different.

Corrales when he got knocked down the 2nd time visually took the mouthpiece out with his glove.

Rico had his back towards the referee when he got knocked down with a vicious uppercut.

So he could've assumed Rico got the mouthpiece knocked out of his mouth from the uppercut.

I'm pretty sure Fury was already scheduled to fight Usyk although I could be wrong.

But yes Fury/Ngannou was very bad considering how easy Joshua took apart Ngannou.

I don't like the idea of another rematch either but with the major talking point of the highly debatable stoppage and the fact alot people believe Rico was ahead on points.

Usyk is kind of forced to take the rematch now with all this added unnecessary drama that has been created.

But i guess Usyk beating Kabayel in a convincing manner would erase some of the memories of the Rico fight. Similar to how Fury gave a good effort vs Usyk after the bad showing vs Ngannou.

The referee must replace the mouthpiece after a knockdown

If the referee determines it wasn't intentional, they will determine the boxers overall condition then continue from there. If the mouthpiece continues to come out unintentionally, the boxer must be warned then penalized.

Intentional spitting out results in a warning or a point taken off. At the referees discretion. Continued intentional spitting will result in a DQ.

Corrales spitting the mouthpiece out during two counts and not being disqualified or waved off shows there’s a fairly high bar to play around with I guess.

I remember the WBC presidents opinion the bout should have been stopped by DQ. The written rules support what referee Tony Weeks decided though. Corrales arguably had the first piece come out by accident. Weekes visably unimpressed, the second time it came out it was automatic points deduction.

Many say the spirit of the rules was violated and Weekes was too lenient. Castillo Corrales is basically the textbook scenario for this refereeing decision.

maybe double the points each time it drops during a knockdown idk, if its within the rules and usually just a point, someone fighting to survive the round will take that every day of the week. Automatic disqualification leaves no room for a mistaken call whether deliberate or not.

That's fair enough but I just wish the fight could've had a more conclusive ending as a boxing fan.

It would've added to the drama and enhanced the fight.

Both Usyk & Rico come out of the fight looking better.

And we don't have all this silly controversy talk which has kind of put a bit of a downer on the whole event as a whole.
