Usyk-Verhoeven stoppage video (stoppage after the bell)

Who cares? The ref has total discretion in the ring. He can wave a fight off whenever he damn well pleases. Before the bell, after, when the fighter is on their stool, when a fighter comes out for the next round, it doesn't matter.

Rico has no case and it will go absolutely nowhere. Especially since the same ref gave him an eternity to get his mouthpiece put back in that he spit out. Hard to argue bias against you when the ref is giving you 3 business weeks to get your act together after a brutal knockdown where you went through the ropes.

 

I heavily disagree with the stoppage but understand it was still a valid one and I would not think there’s any case that makes it illegal. Peter Fury is a pretty straightforward guy and said it was a fair stoppage but he should’ve been allowed to continue.

 

The issue with this is that Rico spat out his gumshield and had a lot of recovery time after the knockdown. The referee allowed him a lot of time, and then when the action resumed he was getting weighed in on.

It should have gone to a final round, but you can understand how the referee stopped it. Especially as Rico is not an experienced professional boxer.

 

Like when Usyk transformed him into a stumbling corpse in round 9 where he bounced off every rope in existence until just about managing to stand upright to make it to the corner? Nobody could complain if the ref waved him off there, he was seriously hurt. Or that cut against Wallin where he lost a ridiculous amount of blood. Or the Wilder miraculous rise from the dead. He has amazing never say die attitude and powers of recovery but those three examples he could have been waved off just like Verhoeven could’ve been allowed to continue. Whether it’s because he’s unfamiliar to the referee who knows, it shouldn’t matter.

Firstly, who cares what a bunch of morons say on YouTube? Argumentum ad populum. They might not like the ref waving it off at or after the bell, but it is totally within the ref's rights to do so. I don't like that the ref gave Rico a year to get his mouthpiece put back in and think the fight should have been restarted immediately after Rico got up from the KD. Doesn't matter though because the ref is God in the ring and decided to give Rico a nice long break.

Secondly, maybe the ref doesn't stop it if that's Tyson Fury or Oleksandr Usyk. I for sure said the same thing when Mark Norman didn't wave the fight off in the 9th of Usyk and Fury's first fight. Again though, what does that matter? The ref had good cause to wave the fight off and he did so. This wasn't some Rolly v. Barroso deal where one fighter is in no trouble whatsoever and the fight got waved off. Rico was cooked.

Thirdly, you not liking the scorecards is fine, but it doesn't prove any corruption whatsoever. I personally only had Rico up by a round after the 10th. The punch stats had both guys dead even. Rico was landing mostly on Usyk's shoulders, arms, and gloves while getting a lot of credit for looking more active and rough housing, not necessarily because he was landing cleaner punches. And everyone was more than fair to Rico here. He was fouling repeatedly and never got docked points. He spit his gumshield out to buy time. Wasn't docked points. All the commentators were on his side and Coppinger was giving him every round like his life literally depended on it. Turki got in the ring after the fight and demanded a rematch because he didn't like the stoppage. Seems like Rico was treated pretty fairly to me.

And who the hell cares about Frans Botha?

Anyway, calm down, Nancy. It's not some super duper grand conspiracy or the end of the world. Rico did very well, gassed out, and got beat up and stopped. Usyk tends to do that to people.

 

On the same level as Groves-Froch I in the shite stoppage stakes. Groves was never KD like vehoeven but he wasn’t stopped after the bell rang

 

He did it twice, by the way.

 

Froch got booed out of the ring in that fight, you would think the fans would appreciate seeing him get the living **** knocked out of him for six rounds and then rally back in the second half and create the possibility of the ref jumping in. Ungrateful idiocy. That stoppage was way too early but general consensus is that Groves was only going to the canvas and out with Froch’s proved reputation. That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be given a chance to earn that belt. There were a lot of rounds left though. The first sign he was hurt he gets Foster wrapping his arms around him, he shoved him off in disgust two seconds after.

 

I agree it won't go anywhere. But total discretion is different from a mistake. He didn't intend to end the fight after the round ended. He just ****ed up, although I understand it was chaotic.

 

Let's not forget Usyk knocked down Rico twice. Early stoppage or not.

 

I thought the ref was stepping in to stop them fighting after the bell but the idiot stopped the fight.

One of the worst stoppages I've ever seen.

 

Boxing federation would never allow a kickboxer to win a boxing title belts. That would be the end of the sport.
