Who did Leon Spinks beat in his 7 pro fights to warrant a shot at the HW GOAT Ali's world titles?

He even had a draw on his record, I believe.

Was his daughter in a bomb shelter the entire training camp? Fat Cossack just sounds like hes making excuses for an embarrassing performance really which is sad. Everyone has bad nights, just shrug it off and come back better next time. His country was at war when he was masterclassing Dubois and outdoing Fury, he was in top shape for those, I don't buy the war excuse. Didn't see the post fight interview last night, only just seen it but yeah, that's embarrassing to me

Yes a prime Patterson was dropped by a fighter making their pro debut and it was far from a flash KD

This is what I mean about the boxing nostalgists viewing everything from the past through the lens of rose-tinted goggles and everything from the present through the lens of a microscope

We have Usyk routinely fighting giants who dwarf him or much bigger fighters in their backyards or on the road when in his mid to late 30s and past or well past his prime when so many of the HW ATGs were giants and very often bigger or much bigger than their opponents and never once gave away the kind of size advantages Usyk has been doing for his entire tenure At HW or were big for the division at the time or roughly the same size as their opponents and if they did sometimes give away huge size advantages it was during their primes vs slow and unathletic Frankenstein's monsters who didn't even know how to use their range

Yes he was 6-0-1 and the draw was vs the best fighter he'd fought, Scott LeDoux who was 3-5 in his last 8 and considered a club fighter/journeyman by many and one of Holmes' weakest title defences of his reign, a long reign with many weak title defences for that matter vs many badly overmatched challengers who had no right whatsoever being in the ring with him

Wasn't Leon Spinks a gold medalist with 3x the pro boxing matches Verhoeven had ? And his brother was undisputed in the weight class below. Get that trash out of here, terrible equivalence. Half that list got heavily criticized for taking gimmick fights anyway

Leon was a gimmick fight, actually.

    3x as many means seven.

    Not the same, but comparable.

He did, actually. I have nothing against Usyk as a man, but it absolutely is clownish that a multimillionaire worth 9 figures is complaining his daughter and family are still in Ukraine, especially when he spends so much time outside of Ukraine.

His wife won't live anywhere else.

Really, you have been a good poster in the past, but it is flat-out vile judging someone for their unfortunate circumstances like this. He is in very strange position, being Ukrainian when they are being occupied, being a Russian speaker with a Russian wife, being famous in a time when his country is at war. Really, I am not calling you out or trying to start a fight, but maybe just think it over. You haven't walked in his shoes.

Yeah it was such a gimmick fight to target an unbeaten Olympic Gold Medalist LOL. Crap fight for sure because Spinks was unproven but I'll take fighting an inexperienced prospect and former olympic champion to whoever the hell Ricky Verhoe is. Don't you ever put these cherrypicks in the same breath, Usyk dropped his belt to his mandatory challenger in order to target a damn past it kickboxer who had 1 pro fight

Point is that it is comparable, and Ali lost.

No it is not. I explained how it is not, and you have not refuted my points

And if you want to stir this conversation to debating overall greatness between Ali and Usyk I'm down, it would be quite easy for me

    Yet it still was.
You should read the article, its pretty clear that at the time it was viewed as a joke of a fight, and that there were much more deserving challengers.

And "unbeaten" here is a meaningless term, given how few fights Spinks had had at the time and against whom. Also, he had a draw against a journeyman.
Heck, Rico was unbeaten too going into the Usyk fight
