I'd rather see Benavidez against Opetaia or Bivol. Beterbiev is 41 and hasn't fought in over a year, the Russian is a champion but father time is undefeated.
I don't know how much more we can expect from a 41 year old. Golovkin who was amazing didn't keep his form that long. Almost noone does. And beterbiev isn't a slickster. But to me it would also be any combination of benavidez, bivol and beterbiev. Just why not in light heavy? Benavidez wants to go down, anyways. He knows opetaia would light him up in cruiser.
dude is very old right now but he might be the most impressive 40+ year old fighter I've seen after Hopkins.
If anything this helps Beterbiev. He’s the old one who gets hurt training easy; not having to worry about a weight cut would no doubt make training easier on him and increase his in-ring performance.
Golovkin mentally checked out after he got the big DAZN money deal and when he fired Abel Sanchez. That was the big red flag there for me. I knew the slide started then.... Beterbiev had a cease and desist letter from Top Rank which prevented him from fighting Deon Nicols in November 2025. The plan was for Beterbiev and Benavidez to win their fights (same card) and announce their fight before Ramadan 2026 started. Then Benavidez went rogue and announced the Zurdo fight to steal Canelo's Cinco de Mayo date .. In the background, Beterbiev got into trouble with Top Rank who blocked the Nichols fight even though their deal expired in June 2025. Beterbiev still couldn't fight for 1+ year after that expiry date. Top Rank did a dirty there (stalling the career of an already ageing fighter) and other fighters need to take heed about who and where they sign up. The good thing is that Beterbiev has still spent time in the gym, kept the weight off and the reflexes sharp enough to come back without struggling too much. Hopefully he can have a warm up fight and then get back to business. Beterbiev v Benavidez is the most fan friendly fight out there. This content is protected Watch from 4:00 onwards
That's good to hear. Didn't know about anything of that. What's your read on why ggg left sanchez and why did you take it as a bad sign?
I tend to agree. He probably has one last good effort left in him, and I'd rather see him use it against Bivol to settle the trilogy.
