30 years ago Kevin Kelley fought Derrick Gainer in Jacksonville, Florida in an absolute thriller of a battle where he had to bite down against the talented southpaw while his eye was closed shut and both fighters get knocked down in the process. It was really good back and forth with the knockdowns, and a dramatic KO with Kelley’s eye shut. Jim Lampley pointed out that it was a couple months after a one-eyed Arturo Gatti also had a dramatic KO over Wilson Rodriguez Kelley had some really good fights. This one, Naseem Hamed, Alejandro Gonzalez, Troy Dorsey. I don’t remember any of USA’s Tuesday Night Fights being better than Kelley-Dorsey
Kelley reminds me so much of The Black Knight from Monty Python’s Holy Grail………staggering forward on one leg, blood pouring from the stumps that used to be his arms….”Have at you!”
Great fight. Kelley was awesome. He had it all Skills, heart, power, guts, exciting style etc. Drama filled fights, wars, one punck knockouts and some boxing clinics . He was box office and must see tv. Oh and he could talk and sell a fight with the best of them ( the buildup to the Hamed fight was terrific). Would Def be a star if he was fighting today.
