David Benavidez vs Noel Mikaelian is possible for November 21st

To be fair, back then the Benavidez situation was a bit different than right now with Opetaia, but it was a criticism lobbied against Canelo.

 

Anyone who thinks Benavidez is afraid of Opetaia has no idea about boxing, the fight will happen sooner or later and Benavidez will win...

 

It became a way to throw sand into casuals eyes. He was the undisputed great super middle weight champion, yet he wouldn't fight benavidez.

It would have been legitimate to say benavidez is too big, but then he would have had to admit to maybe not being so unchallengable at super middle. So what were the belts actually worth in determining his greatness.

It's the same with all these metrics. Players (in this case boxers) try to optimize the metrics. If the game was arranged in a way so that the best fights were made, it would be good. That would be the case if everyone actually cared more for the matchups and performances than a simple metric like number of belts and weight classes.

As it is, everyone was so impressed that he beat kovalev at light heavy, who was a shell of himself, drained and not fit to fight shortly after the yarde fight. And kovalev performed badly. Leaving out weight divisions and belts, it would have been way less impressive.

Also he gave us a rocky fielding fight to get that belt... What a waste of everyone's time. Could have fought a good middleweight without a belt instead. Would have been a better fight.


So why would I start counting the number of belts and divisions when speaking of one's greatness. It's marketability and bs. Apart from thr fact that you only get a chance to do it, when you have money behind you. Which is not a measure of your skill, but mostly of where you were born and where you signed.

And when fighters start collecting belts instead of looking for the most sought after fights, it's as annoying as when they go for the money fights.

They can do it, after all it is their job, but my job as a fan of the sport is to be pissed about it.

Great post, congratulations. I always say, you shouldn't count the belts to determine a boxer's greatness (we're in the era of four world belts for each weight class), but it's important, among other things, which opponents you've managed to defeat, because 'the best fight (and beat) the best'

I love it when I see people writing these things, it shows they're intelligent. It has nothing to do with idiotic fanboys who only speak to flatter their idols, throwing manure at other boxers.
