Dave Allen vs Thomas Carty set for Sept. 5 in Dublin

It's a shame the English belt isn't seen as anywhere near as important or prestigious as the British one.

It's vacant at the moment, but I'd say Allen would probably scoop that up easy. I'd say he's sort of in the middle, between English level and British level. When you look at some of the British champions in the past 10 years - Riakporhe, Wardley, Joyce, Dubois, Whyte, Joshua... all way above his level.

The system has a little glitch here because the Commonwealth champ gives up their belt when they advance to the world level. Meaning the British dominating the division at some point actually makes the title easier to obtain. While during the 70s you were never getting that title because Bugner was never getting Ali/Frazier/Foreman's title and he always needed the Commonwealth belt to fall back on.

I find Dave Allen to be so unlikeable. Every buildup is basically the same: "Yeah, I didn't train for my last fight, and I froze up against a beatable Russian lump, but I swear I'll take this one seriously." His fanbase eats it up every time. Then again, most of them are casual boxing fans, so I guess let them enjoy their slop. But why root for someone who clearly has natural talent but never seems to take this sport seriously? What's really crazy is that Allen's fanbase is bigger than Joyce's right now.

 

Thomas Carty is a talented fighter and you can see he has had his fair share of straighteners on the tarmac. However true to form he does not take his training all that seriously or his diet, and is not in the greatest shape.

If Allen comes in half baked and fleshy, Carty could do a job on him.

If this was a straightener Carty would stop Allen, but in the boxing ring its a 50/50 fight.
