Andre Ward gets teleported to the 1940s heavyweight division who is going to stop him from reigning

Ward didn't "bulldoze" the Light Heavies of his era, he isn't bulldozing a damn thing in the 1940's Heavyweight scene. Tony Galento, Lou Nova, and even Buddy Baer would be insurmountable walls that Ward wouldn't be able to scale, let alone break down. Tony vs Ward would probably be the funniest potential h2h fight in history for Ward because he'd have to face someone who could foul better than him with a crude, lower center of gravity, rough style that neutralizes anything Ward attempts on the front foot.

As others have pointed out, Ward is not particularly athletic. He had average power on a good day even for a light heavy, decent but not dazzling hand speed, good footwork but not matador/Roy Jones level, decent raw strength and durability, but nowhere near Beterbiev level. Ward made it as an elite fighter primarily because he has great fundamentals, good timing, and ring IQ from his excellent amateur days, good stamina/heart to never quit or crumble under pressure, a good coach in Virgil Hunter, and a willingness to channel his inner Holyfield to deliver headbutts that would make a Pachycephalosaurus proud and low blows that would make Andrew Golota give a thumbs up.

Overall, Ward was a solid fighter and a decent threat to many other elite light heavies, but even the more crude and smaller gatekeeping contenders/journeymen heavyweights of the Joe Louis era would slaughter Ward.

 

Who will stop him? How about all of them. Louis, Walcott, Charles, Bivins, H. Johnson, Conn. To be honest I don't think Ward gets past the Light-Heavyweights of the 40s, he's not going to be a HW champ.

There are about 30 HW's in this era better than Galento. He is not the class of this era. He got his only title shot by cheating.

Also Galento's whole thing is committing crimes in the ring against better opponents unless they could beat the bleep out of him before he did so. How do you know he's not losing?

Nova is not one of the best HW's of the period either and Savold won by exploiting a cut on the eyes Galento tried to gogue out. He didn't compare well with anyone at the top level but was clearly on it was about .500 against major opponents. This was a good 8 years and 40 fights before Savold lost to Marciano and powerless Louis. Savold was in his "prime".

 

Well there's like a 60 pound difference, and if nothing else Galento could certainly crack with good power and had a good chin with a rough style. It's only common sense and a matter of time before the smaller man with less power gets into trouble attempting to have a rough close range fight with a man who surpasses him in the most important stats for a rough fight. It would be like a pitbull trying to have a 1vs1 with a black bear. Ward doesn't make it past the 4th round unless he uses his brain and boxes.
