Tony Tubbs

You have some fighters who’s resume’s look better on paper than their abilities look on film. Then you have fighters who’s actual skills are better than what their resume’s reflect . Tony “ TNT” Tubbs was the latter. He didn’t have many big wins. But when seen in action it was clear that he had very fast hands, good footwork and top notch skills. His stamina and work rate weren’t bad either for a man carrying around a lot of weight on most occasions. He even went fifteen rounds a time or two. Tubbs in my mind will always be one of those “ what if “ fighters. I’ve often wondered over the years what he might have become if he were consistently in top shape, motivated and matched with the right guys.

 

Thought he took Witherspoon to school for a few rounds,Really confident looking fighter.Merchant & Leonard were very critical of his weight throughout the hbo broadcast,I thought Timmy nicked the last two rounds to win it

Gonna watch the Bowe fight later,A few on here had him winning looking at some older threads

 

96-94 Close but clear Tubbs victory vs Riddick Bowe

Tubbs is a big target but i cant score points for Bowe hitting Tony's gloves and fresh air.Riddick nearly fell out out of the ring in the 7th after Tubbs's Matrix move

Late great Gene Hackman looked invested at ringside.Alex Wallau sounds just like Robert Duvall

 

The commentary team pretty much ignored the first two rounds of the fight, and at one point even suggested that Bowe was trying to tire Tubbs out by walking into his jabs.

 

I know,Ive heard Wallau loads of times and seems a genuine fan (Sure he worked with Flash Gordon doing them fanzines?) but i thought he got it wrong here

 

He had strong skills, but didn't train, and had the drug issues of the 80s.

 

He was so fast and fluid for someone that size and he threw multiple punch combinations.
Tubbs and Dokes wasted talent .

 

He did train-----remember those stories about his roadwork? He'd park his Rolls Royce and get out and jog at the park. Then hurry back to his car.

 

Tubbs & practically all of the top guys from his era would tear everyone up today apart from Usyk, who gets slightly less tore up.

 

I watched Tubbs v Marvis Frazier from 79 or 80? Interesting to see his style of boxing nearly completely different to the style he boxed in the mid 80s,His trainer mist have been a Canzoneri fanatic?
