Benny Leonard might be an exception to this rule but he wasn't in the last 100 years so he doesn't factor in to the lists I've been thinking about lately. Someone smarter than me can tell me if he had one or not.

One can also say Larry Holmes was Spinks Hagler. Spinks was a bigger underdog than SRL was vs Hagler.

At any rate Spinks has no case over Ray.

Floyd is obviously ahead of Leonard. Hatred of a fighter isn't supposed to factor into their all time ranking. Pacquiao is also ahead.

It's fine to have Leonard in the top ten, but he isn't top 5.

I would go as far as saying Spinks' Holmes was at least a little closer to being an analog to Leonard's Hagler than Tyson would be.

Holmes-Spinks 1 just for some reason completely left my brain.

Leonard has three wins, and perhaps four, better than Floyd’s best win. If you want to say that Floyd ranks higher than Sugar Ray that’s your choice but there’s no obvious about it.

    Yes.

Tbf 1987 Hagler isn't quite 1988 Tyson, but Spinks was just roadkill. Just making it somewhat competitive would have gone a long way.

    He was? That's interestering,

That was a great achievement no doubt, but Holmes at that time was running it close with guys like Williams and said himself (as you and I and others have quoted many times here) that he was done with facing the best comp. Spinks was a cherry pick gone wrong.

Hagler was also ageing and had a good amount of miles on his clock, but he had consistently faced the best and taken care of business. And Spinks was still in his prime while Leonard wasn't.

Spinks was indeed a cherry pick gone wrong. Despite Holmes struggling against lower contenders it was an enormous upset and historic. The whole straight from 175 to heavyweight with no warm up was huge.

I totally agree Spinks has no argument ahead of Ray. The demolition job loss to Tyson really hurt Spinks. Many forget what a fantastic career he had at 175 and many casuals wouldn't have a clue, he's the guy Tyson destroyed before many were seated lol. Tyson was one of the most watched and high profile fighters in history so Spinks lost on the biggest of stages.

Spinks might be the most underrated fighter ever. Not here, but in general.

Actually, he'd be well in the mix.
