How Good is Rocky Marciano’s Resume Actually?

This is incorrect
Buonvino 1950 unranked and never ranked , and had won just 2 of his last 7 fights. Beshore 1951 unranked and had not been ranked for 3 years,lost 8 of his last 11 fights.
1952 Reynolds unranked,and never ranked ,won 2 of last 7.
That brings us down to 11 fights .

 

Thought Reynolds was ranked in the 40s no?

 

Marciano’s resume is somewhere in the 3-7 all time ranking. His wins over prime Layne, LaStarza, Matthews are always overlooked. Argument against Matthews as a “hype job” are fine but he did beat Layne who beat Walcott, Turkey Thompson, Brion, Charles, Satterfield and others and he had high praise for Matthews even thinking he would beat Marciano before they met.
Regardless for all the fluff he gets over who was in prime and not everyone seems to ignore Layne who was a better contender than Williams, Machen, or Folley when at his best. Heck Archie was wayyy better than those men alone. His resume imo blows Listons out of the water and I think highly of Liston.

 

In fact you could make this argument about every boxing era, not just the 90s or 50s. Though some would be more difficult than others.

 

His career began in 46,I can't find any evidence he was ever ranked.

That's fair point I misspoke about them being world level. Marciano really goes consistent world Level from the Matthews bout onward. Before that he sprinkled in a few stay busy type fights in between the Louis's, Savold's and Laynes.

 

Taking into account the era he fought in, who else was there? When we break down Louis’ resume it’s not all that impressive either. Johnson’s title reign is even worse.

 

I have it down that he was ranked by the Ring in 49. I don't remember where I found that.

Every few years there is a very polarizing debate on Rocky's resume.

IIRC last time the thread reached something like 60 or 70 pages.

 

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen BF24 page open on classic without a Marciano thread. He’s a fascinating fighter, always entertaining, and highly controversial for some reason.

 

Savold was ranked, but effectually washed up.

 

Thanks for the info.Reynolds fought Marciano in52 having won 2 of his last 7 ,3 of those fights were with Lowry,he managed 1 win.1 loss and a draw out of them. Reynolds had 3 more fights after the Marciano defeat, losing 3 by ko and beating a journeyman.
