What next for boxing?

Overall, this is a slower time for boxing with less big name fighters less quality matchups. The key is that it’s just temporary. Like everything else, boxing is cyclical and the good matchups will show up again. I’m not worried about the sport at all from the point of view of good fighters. I am worried about it a bit from the point of view of if they’re promoters will let them fight each other.

 

There are some skilled fighters coming up, but not many interesting personalities

 

There's an impending coup attempt. So how that goes will really set the agenda. If Zuffa wins it's closed roster fighting for a belt time.

 

Too much pessimism. The fighters don't have to be mega-talented to have good fights, and there are plenty of greedy promotors competing with each other these days to make stars, with Dana White, the IBA, etc jumping into this thing. Just enjoy a good train wreck when you see it.

The light middleweight division has entered the chat. Ennis, Fundora, Ortiz. You've got three "kings" right there, all around age 28. And waiting in the wings is Haney, who clearly can move up into 154. Before Haney moves up though, hopefully he fights Shakur, who is only 29.

Move down to 118, Jesse Rodriguez, who is 26. Unfortunately I think Turki's money is about to get the guy ironed out by moving him up too quickly, but taking that aside, he's the best, most exciting American little dude in a long time.

How about a battle of the 168lb division's giraffes Sheeraz and Pacheco?

Heavyweight? Dubois is only 28. Wardley is only 31. Ituama is what 21?

I'm unsure why you're so down on the younger crew.

 

I used to read boxing magazines and newspapers while drinking my morning coffee from 4 am to 6am every morning during the 90's and 2000's. I went from Cuba to Mexico to America and Nicaragua scouting some of the biggest prospects on the planet. My love for the sport of boxing has waned during recent times. Where is the talent?

The sport of boxing is at an all time low.

 

It's cyclical. Even so, to say the sport is at an all time low is to ignore the fact that In Usyk, Crawford and soon Inoue, there's been three all time greats plying their trade at the same time. You could add Canelo to that, certainly in terms of box office. Stars generate interest in the divisions concerned and helps to elevate the sport as a whole. Their time has come to an end and so it seems that a fallow period will ensue. However the nature of these big stars is that they hog all the attention and slow down the sport as everything becomes about them and they can only fight every so often. Now they're gone the onus is on the next generation to take the mantle. It'll take time for the new talent to emerge, but there's no shortage of it in some countries at least. I'd look East for the new stars, that looks to be the growth area for boxing right now.

Bam has been doing nothing but fighting other title holders. I think he has a sum total of one defense where another belt wasn't on the line. He won 3 of the 4 at 115, tried to make a fight for the 4th but got ducked, moved up to 118 to challenge for a title in his first match at that weight and won. He's going to fight once again at 118, a unification, and then move up to 122 and challenge Inoue for undisputed at 122. On top of that, he shows up to throw down every single time, is plenty happy for a firefight, always tries for a KO, never runs. He's got a lot of fans, and he's got some haters because some think he's overrated, but he's a model champ who does exactly what you want a champ to do in ring and out.

To claim there's not real **** going on these days when guys like Bam exist is silly. All he needs to do is fight 6x-8x a year and he's a dude who stepped out of a time machine from the 40s.

Also, regarding 147/154 -- Haney will fight anyone. At heavyweight, Dubois and Parker will fight anyone. AJ will mostly fight anyone.

It's no as bad as you make it seem.
