Gets undeserved big fight and payday > Turns up like a blob > Makes excuses and says he didn’t take it serious or tries to mask it with humour > Repeat.
Dave Allen is unlikable. He plays the "every man" character, when he's a landlord with numerous properties and who doesn't have a full-time job. He's earned his money by fleecing a subset of boxing fans. He's never been any good. He self-handicaps so that if he loses, and he always does when he faces someone half decent, he can then say it's not due to his lack of talent but due to not trying and just being your average bloke. It's all fun and games now until a few years down the line.
I've never rated Allen, he is literally Homer Simpson in that boxing episode. Fair play to the lad, him and MR have pulled a master stroke promotion wise. When he turned over he wasnt even the best Heavyweight in Doncaster. He has never been much cop.
I don't think they've had to pull a masterstroke. It's been too easy. The boxing fans are ridiculously easy to dupe, over and over.
I cant think of an area level fighter that has the profile he has. The opportunities he's had compared to his talent is mind blowing. He must be worth a few bob by now.
But to be fair, it’s a profile Dave has built for himself, and as Schopenhauer said, “If you want to reach a large audience, appeal to idiots.” Plus, don’t believe for one second that doing things the way Allen does and has, doesn’t come with huge trade-offs, same as it does for anyone in a similar position.
It has been made possible by his ability to take a punch. Without that, the whole schtick would've fallen apart.
