While Shavers wasn't an ATG, the knockout king was stopped in the first round by Jerry Quarry.

 

Unfortunately in most cases the ATG is usually at the end of there
career's when they lose in such a manner , or clearly passed
there best.
But a great example is Sal Sanchez vs Wilfredo Gomez,
Sanchez simply overpowered the "knock out artist "

I always thought defensive counterpunching was Mayweather's game even moreso than Marquez'.

 

He didn’t win the but Ray Leonard pulled up awfully close when fighting Duran’s fight in Montreal.

In some ways, I can imagine Duran viewing that as a negative as at the time, given that Ray still did so well even when sacrificing his more ideal style/strategy in order to fight mano a mano.

IIRC, DLH kinda did it in reverse over his two fights vs Chavez, Oscar electing to go more toe to toe second time around - proving he had it over JC any which way.

Oh dear, you might have opened a can of worms, a very long and decisive can of worms, along with how great, or not Marciano is, the, did he didnt he, regarding Leonards performance against Duran is sure to get posters all in a tither, on the one hand you have the posters saying " what choice did he have " on the other is mine and yours, in that he wanted to go toe to toe and prove he had balls , to match his undoubted skills, lets see........

Yeah, some feel that Duran forced it. However, Ray clearly and very uncharacteristically began the fight flat footed before Duran applied any real duress. FWIW, the commentary uniformly observed same.

I’ll reserve that Ray possibly might’ve wanted to move more later in the fight but the Duran body work he invited in the earlier rounds might’ve put it beyond Ray’s voluntary election to do so by that stage.

We can seal it off with motive also. Ray let Duran’s barbs and abuse get into his head - Ray took the personal effects of same into the fight with him - he really wanted to out -man Roberto.

It taught Ray a great lesson and it was Leonard himself who got into opponents heads on occasion, later in the piece, not least being the head of Duran in their rematch.

 

I've voiced this opinion many times on this very site.
Montreal Duràn, the very best he every was and would be, was on his bicycle in the 14th, and especially the 15th rd of that classic fight.
Though Duràn clearly won the fight.
He had to know deep down in side he was fighting just to survive after the 11th rd.
Not to dominate and win as he had done through out the early rds.
My opnion is the end of this fight sowed the seeds of what would happen in New Orleans about 6 months later. .
A very prideful man like Duràn with the disdain he had for Leonard, couldn't handle the psychological jabs , being embarrassed in front of millions of people worldwide and Leonard not fighting him on his terms as he did in Montreal,
Had a "psychotic break" reacted without thinking of the consequences.
Quit.
But he did learn from it. That's what important.
