Shows you the power of boxing media and how desperate the boxing world is for American box office attractions. There is a desperation to push and hype American and Mexican fighters because there is more money there. But how did actual boxing fans fall for it? I always thought Spence was mediocre and protected. He was never impressive. His best wins are a blown up fat Lightweight who he couldn't even stop. And a washed up Brook and Porter. He did blast out Chris Algieri. Big freaking deal. Algieri was the definition of a former paper champ. His best win against an opponent in their prime is Algieri. Riveting stuff there. Besides his paper thin resume he just looks completely uninspiring and meh. His power isn't threatening. He is slow. He plods. He doesn't have a super high workrate. His skills and defense are lacking. He never moves his head. The whole thing is nothing close to impressive.
Ironically, most of the same people who thought he was special, were the same ones denigrating Manny Pacquiao. Who did everything thrice as good and was twice as fast. Shows you the profound blind spots and rank hypocrisy that fanboyism is capable of producing. Kind of like how Inoue currently gets hit with 6.9 punches per round coming forward, while Haney and Shakur get hit with 7.1 while running for their lives and desperately holding every time someone gets near them. Yet they're considered defensive masters.
Same. never passed the eye test for me. always knew crawford would whoop him, and I legit believe Pac would have the nod over him also if the fight went through
They are both southpaws, but that is basically where the comparison ends. Their careers and styles were almost nothing alike. It is bizarre to see fanboys compare a plodder to Manny Pacquiao. I realize Pacquiao was in his prime 20 years ago now, so it has been a while and maybe a lot of these guys don't remember at this point. But Pacquiao was so goddamn fast that Marquez said the reason he got knocked down 3 times in round 1 was because Pacquiao's hands and feet were so fast that he could literally not see the punches coming. This is one of the best counterpunchers in boxing history saying he couldn't see the punches coming.
I do think Spence was very good, Just not as great as people thought. Your point about Inoue is fantastic. The fact that he’s offensive minded with a great defense is deadly. It’s very difficult to find those kind of boxers.
To add a little more seasoning to the hypocrisy debate. While people were shouting from the rafters that Crawford beating Canelo was enough to unseat Usyk as P4P#1. While of course saying in terms of skillset, Crawford was the superior of the two. But since they're both back foot southpaw counter punchers, let's take a look shall we? Usyk gets tagged clean approximately 7.2 times per round (Shakur level), while Crawford gets tagged an egregious 7.7 times per round. ****ing punch magnet Anthony Joshua's average is 7.8.
I always thought he was overrated too. I didn't even know who he was for quite some time. But let's be honest. Most boxers are overrated hype jobs anyway.
Anyone who says that Spence was not good is freaking ******ed. Now, that being said, Spence was grossly overhyped by a very vocal fan base, who viewed him as an ATG talent... and I want to call them ultra ******s for it. Spence was a solid B tier modern welterweight. He was clearly better than someone like Danny Garcia, but still at the same level as Shawn Porter. And while Spence did beat Brook, IMO they could be splitting fights easily if they fought again and again. Spence was a good body puncher with a decent southpaw jab. And bad boxers don´t steamroll someone like Lamont Peterson.
Same question applies to Canelo. Basic plodding boxers are not special they will always come undone by a man who can move and box. Crawford was fantastic but he still has a thin resume and him slapping roidnelo around the ring saved his career. The biggest problem in today's boxing is the politics out of the ring. They all time waste so much jockeying for position or looking for fairly big advantages with weight cuts or timings that they just never end up fighting each other. It's a joke. Spence Crawford should have happend years before it did and no doubt Crawford had a part to play on that also. Pacwuia Mayweather years too late. Fury AJ tricky one because AJ found a way to get chinned over every other fight. The list goes on.
First off, he was good. Not great but good. It takes guts to travel to lion’s den and snatch Brook’s belt. Regardless of what happened to Brook in his previous fight, that’s something turds like Gervonta or Ryan Garcia would never do. But yes, he was overhyped. He was the best of a mediocre bunch that were sold as elites thanks to good marketing, gullible PBC nuthuggers and blatant ducking of Crawford for half a decade.
Because he was. Just because he wasn't some ATG once in a generation talent doesn't mean he wasn't good.
Forget once in a generation talent. He wasnt even close to being among the best fighters of his own generation.
He would've taken Juna Manuel Marquez apart. Supposed boxing fans who "coincidentally" hate anyone who was associated with PBC are now having their "aha" moment because a future HOFer lost a relatively close decision to a contender in the wrong weightclass after a three year layoff at age 36.
I think Spence was a solid fighter good enough to unify titles and be a top welterweight for a period The knock against him is the two best fighters of his time were Thurman and Crawford and he did not beat them. In his defense Thurman appeared to want no part of it. Spence tried to face the faded Pacquiao who still was at a high level and big fight but that fell through. Not that struggling with Shawn Porter is a knock but I felt Thurman beat Porter more handily. I remember being at bar in Queens arguing with a Spence fan during the Porter fight pointing out **** and telling him going in it was going to be a hard fight I think Spence had a pretty good career, I know people will put asterisks on stuff but he has wins over Algieri, Brook, Porter, the two Garcia's, Ugas, Petersen with two of those wins being after the car crash My biggest knock is really how badly he was destroyed by Crawford. There is no shame losing to Bud but normally when two best of a generation fighters clash its competitive. I'm thinking Leonard-Hearns, Mosely-De La Hoya, etc. Spence was never in that fight and never beat another fighter that I would call great. But he did beat a lot of very good fighters
