Is Joshua-Fury still an intriguing fight as nobody is sure who has declined worse at this stage?

Correct. Wilder is a Glass Jawed fighter and so is AJ. However, unlike Wilder has been AJ was willing to fight or make tough fights. Wilder wasn’t interested in that as most of his title defenses were handpicked Glass Jawed opponents as well. For example Wilder wouldn’t even fight a 40 year old Wlad Klitschko.

But seeing how wilder took his beatings and how big his will to win was, anyone has to respect his heart. Even in the ugly chisora fight he just took multiple bombs that took joyce and takam down and scared wallin away. (All heavier and more compact than him i think)

Also I don't think wilder sued fury to get the third fight because of the money. I think he really wanted to avenge his loss(es).

So I think if anyone it was his team avoiding bad business propositions from a risk perspective.

Seeing Wilders heart I must assume he would have taken any fight under reasonable conditions.

 

Look at their last few opponents though... I think Wilder is making up for lost time while AJ is going backwards.

 

He fought him at the perfect time, then threw years of his career away to avoid the rematch. Wlad should have pulled out of the fight until his ex was gone. Fury ditched the Ustinov fight for far less.

 

Wlad fought and lost, and Fury fought the best opponent that was available at the time.

Fury has a thin résumé - his elite wins are largely limited to Klitschko (39 years okd and retired to avoid the rematch), Wilder (proven highly overrated) and Whyte. He never fought AJ in their primes, had long periods of inactivity, and many of his other opponents were not considered top-tier contenders.

AJ appears shot and is well past prime, and was blatantly ducked by Fury.

At least 5 years too late because of Fury's antics.

 

It would be a sound strategy as Fury looks like he has no stamina anymore. However, he'll still be too cautious to avoid Joshua's right, who's essentially a glass cannon at this stage of his career.

 

Fury threw about 500 punches against Makhmudov, landing 200 and Fury's volume increased as the fight went on. His stamina isn't what it was but I think it's still a lot better than AJ's, who hasn't gone rounds in a long time.

So again, who else was he supposed to face? He fought the best opponent at the time and Fury was only like 26 at the time... If he didn't fight Wlad you'd be complaining he ducked him too.

The result will be meaningless because whoever wins it could have been the total opposite a few years back when they were both in their best condition. In that sense it is a battle to see who has declined most. I'm guessing it could be Fury given how he has abused his body over the years and I'll be having a small wager on AJ stopping Fury.

 

If they've declined in lockstep it's not hard to see how it would have gone in their primes imo, but you're right in that we'll never know for sure.
