1970s are an overrated heavyweight era

Yes you had Ali, Frazier and Foreman but the rest were very good fighters but none were time displaced ATG champions.

Lyle, Shavers, Quarry, Norton, Chuvalo, Ellis, Bonavena would be top contenders in any era but none would rule unopposed. And Ellis and Quarry would be fighting as cruiserweights today. Both were smaller than Usyk in weight, height, frame.

But people speak of the 70s like if you plucked Quarry out of the 70s and put him in 1946 or 2026, he would rule the heavyweight roost like a dictator. Like the heavyweight division would be his fifedom. Well he wouldn't rule in either era. And in 2026 he might venture to heavyweight to fight a cherry picked opponent to grab a belt. At 6'0 195-200 he would not be a career heavyweight. Same with Ellis or Bonavena.

You also had Holmes to a extent as well.

What was very good about the era was the matchmaking IMO.

Frazier in full glory, Foreman in full glory, Ali in full glory, Holmes in glory.
That's 4 of the Top 10 (mostly) ATG HW.

I seen it here or on other sites. Maybe not in those exact words. But the idea of "champion in any other era" is associated with him like he was a time displaced champion. I'm not saying you personally have that idea.

For some reason I group Holmes with the 80s guys. But the 90s had Lewis, Bowe, Holyfield, Moorer and Tyson at the beginning. Although I'll admit, in the 70s, the match making was better. For example Moorer never fought Bowe, Lewis or Tyson for one reason or another. Ali fought all of the best of his era when they were prime or close enough

Tyson is from the 80s. He didn't do anything special in the 90s, except for eating Holyfield :)

IMO place that 70s bunch into another era and my guess is half of them win a world belt at some point.

Sure, they are not going to dominate and become ATGs; but I am positive people like Shavers, Norton or Lyle become world champions, even if briefly, even more considering the current alphabet soup.

In the 90s Douglas got his flash in the pan and became a champion.
Mediocre Bruno and Ruiz became champions. Even tomato cans like Seldon and Hide had their moment at the top.

I am positive the 70s top contenders would do better than those "also ran".

I believe in 70s HW supremacy but you are mostly right about Quarry. Quarry's the 10th best 70s HW. That's kind of a separate thing.

Yeah, they ONLY had 3 top 10 of all time heavyweights, as if that isn’t more than any other era. You also forgot Holmes who started boxing in 1972, he’s always been a 70s heavyweight.
you can still easily argue many of them would’ve had an easier time in the 80s and 90s than the 70s.

    A bit to unpack here.

The key thing that made the 70s the greatest decade, was that the top fights got made, with very few exceptions.

The decade is pretty much unique in that respect.

Were the 70s B Team time displaced champions?

None of them would have been a dominant champion in another era, but some of them might have been transient champions in another era.

Take Ali out of the picture, and some of them slip through the cracks, because neither Frazier on Foreman had that sort of longevity.
