Greater fighter: Fernando Vargas or Meldrick Taylor

Meldrick Taylor by quite some margin.

 

Taylor was beating Chavez with two seconds of the fight left while Vargas was completely out-classed by Tito, Chavez vs Taylor was one of the best fights of the 90's, no comparison.

It’s close imo, id pick Taylor due to winning titles in 2 divisions.

 

Taylor was the better/greater fighter, and also had a couple of solid wins after the first JCC fight. Beating Aaron Davis for a world title was a solid win for an undersized-at-147 Taylor. Taylor was showing lots of red flags against Glenwood Brown, but gutted out a tough win.

Yep…it was an amazing fight.

Vargas worked his way back into the fight to make it highly competitive. He finished the 3rd round strong, perhaps helped by Tito catching a thumb in the eye. He dropped Tito in the 4th and soundly won the fifth. Tito turned things back in his favor with a long right hand late in the 6th.

Vargas did good work in the 8th and 9th, although I thought Tito won those rounds. And Vargas closed the 11th strong and won that round.

Tito was generally a step ahead, his power and accuracy was too much, but Vargas gave a good account of himself and won 3 or 4 rounds

 

Absolutely one of the best fights of the noughties, though that bar is lower than the 90s. But it would have been an excellent fight in the 90s too. And Vargas played a huge part in it, giving Tito some nasty moments.

I don't think there's much to choose between the two at all. Vargas often played second fiddle. I'd say Fernando mixed in slightly better company with Mayorga, Mosley, de la Hoya beating him. But Quartey and Winky are solid wins. Meldrick also played second fiddle a bit - outside of Buddy, he seemed to lose to top guys like Chavez and Norris. But Davis was a good win.

Talent wise, peak for peak, it's Taylor but I think Vargas has more depth to his career, probably due to what JCC did to Meldrick.

 

It's Taylor all day for me. He was an incredible talent. Too bad he lost so much in the Chavez fight. He was never the same.

 

I agree Taylor was better. But Vargas wasn't outclassed by Tito. In fact if he wasn't hit with those two intentional low blows to by himself time while hurt, Vargas could have won' that fight. I believe that fight lile Tyson after Douglas or Taylor after Chavez, took it's toll on him and we never saw the same fighter again.

 

I wish Taylor stayed away from Norris and went after the rematch with Chavez instead.

Both exciting fighters to watch and really gave us our money's worth unlike the watered down tripe we see today.

Meldrick Taylor is the better fighter with a slightly better career.

 

Vargas has the best single win of the two fighters outpointing Winky Wright a win that aged very well.

Ike Quartey was also a good win even if it was above Quartey's best weight.

But overall I give the edge to Taylor both fighters won 6 world title fights I believe.

But Taylor for me was more talented and he won titles in 2 weightclasses which is enough for me to give him an edge.

 

Vargas was nigh on close to even on the scorecards vs Tito after 10 rounds.

Even against ODLH he was ahead on points after 9 rounds.

Vargas also has the best single win with a victory against Winky Wright.

There's not that much to choose between them but Taylor having more talent and winning titles at Jr Welterweight, Welterweight, gives him the edge.

But Vargas fought better opposition overall.

The scorecards were BS he was clearly not ready and got humiliated, Chavez vs Taylor is one of the greatest fights ever at 140.

 

No they weren't Vargas got off to a bad start with the 2 knockdowns in the opening round.

But then regained in the 3rd round and had a 10-7 round in the 4th round. With a knockdown and a point deduction which evened up the 2 knockdowns Tito scored earlier.

By the middle rounds the fight was very much on the table until Tito took over in the championship rounds.

The scorecards were very fair and Vargas hardly got humiliated ? He gave Tito a war in one of the best fights of the modern era.

How was Vargas not ready ? He'd already won 6 world title fights by that point and had been battled tested over 12 rounds by Ike Quartey & Winky Wright.
