I've always thought of interim titles as just a guaranteed 1st position spot for a real world titleshot, but not a real title on its own. The reason I ask is I see people calling Bud a 5-division World champion, but he only won world titles at 135,140,147, and 168. The fight with Madirimov was an interim title @154. Thus, he is really a 4-division world champion unless he comes back and fights Boots after he potentially becomes undisputed @154. So, do interim titles count or not? If it does a ton of fighters just got a boost on their resumes. For example, Inoue goes from 26-0 to 28-0 and suddenly has more undefeated title wins than Mayweather. I don't count them though but just want to see what others think.
Yes. Some interim titles clearly aren't worthy but the same is true of non interim titles. The interim label shouldn't be the reason you don't recognize the belt. Interim belts were very rare until the last 10-20 years. They've only become common because fighters are done with eliminators that yield them nothing if they win. WBO interims have been weaker on average then the rest and some WBA interims are an extension of the WBA regular. But these issues have applied to full titles as well.
Interim belts seem to grow metaphorically through the passage of time. A dude gets an interim belt, perhaps loses it, never actually wins it outright but a year or two later, according to the ring announcers and media, he is a former world champion and the interim part gets lost.
Any title which an organization has in which they can have another title above it is not a world champion's title. No organization can have two world champs. It may be their highest rated guy at the moment, but it is not their champion if someone can be rated above them, whether there’s someone there or not. This, of course, is in my sometimes humble opinion.
They don't count for me unless the win of that title does in actuality lead to instatement as champion due to failure of the titlist to face them. If they just win an interim and move on, that doesn't count. I'm not up on things enough to not have to look this instance up to see if it fits what I'm saying. The first time I saw this starting to happen was with Robert Guerrero, when they had the announcer saying x-time, x-weight world champion and I knew they'd counted interim and rolled my eyes.
They do not. Who believes Luis Ortiz is a two-time world heavyweight champion ... like Floyd Patterson? Answer: Nobody. Who believes Luis Ortiz is the first Cuban to not only win the world heavyweight title, but the first to win it TWICE? Answer: Nobody. Who believes Dillian Whyte was a two-time world heavyweight champion ... like Floyd Patterson? Answer: Nobody.
Do you believe Luis Ortiz and Dillian Whyte won the heavyweight title more times than Joe Frazier, Larry Holmes, John Tate, Gerrie Coetzee, Mike Weaver, Pinklon Thomas, Tony Tubbs, Bonecrusher Smith, Michael Spinks, Buster Douglas, Michael Moorer, Andy Ruiz, and Deontay Wilder? Do you believe Luis Ortiz and Dillian Whyte won the heavyweight title just as many times as George Foreman? Do you? Seriously, don't rewrite history.
In the fight with Madrimov there was not only the WBO interim title at stake but also the WBA super welterweight world title, so it is fair to say that Crawford was 5-division world champion.
