If you were to build a fighter made for Trinidad, it would be Antonio DeMarco. Trinidad KO 3 rounds max.
Tito both enjoys significant physical advantages & is a shorter, more precise puncher. Perhaps DeMarco finds his chin for a KD, but Tito should end up w/ a stoppage in a fight that may not be too dissimilar from the Campas fight.
At 147 one thing nobody wanted was Felix Trinidad hitting them. Elte power and size in that weight class.
Pat, I don't know about the 'hardly had a brick wall of a chin' analogy. I always remember DeMarco being pretty durable. Where he suffered - I believe anyway - is where he appeared to gas in long fights of attrition. He didn't suffer knockdowns or knockouts unless they were long fights against big hitters and they all happened between rounds 12 and 14. The guy was pretty damn good and if I'm leaning towards to Tito, it's not by much. Suffice to say I wouldn't be betting the house on this. Especially with Tony being more of a front-runner amid Tito's habit of getting caught early. I think it would be a good fight.
Good call on me underrating his durability — indeed, apart from an early-career retirement after four rounds (of which I assume we have no details), his stoppages were late except for a couple where he was waved off earlier via cuts. That does make me believe he was a bit of a glutton to absorb enough punishment to be stopped late multiple times from accumulation, and Tito also may have been a threat to get an earlier cuts stoppage with his sharp punching, but I still think he’s too easy to hit to come out on top against one of the better offensive welters of all time.
Tito wasnt called creeping death for nothing. He ran marathons and had a knack for coming on like a freight train late in fights. If DeMarco lost his KOs because he gassed late it still doesnt change the equation that Tito is a horrible matchup for him.
I believe we're talking about the 50's welterweight champ, as opposed to the lightweight fixture in the 2000's. Trinidad wins, but I think the first iteration of Tony probably scores a KD before it happens. He had a nasty hook.
DeMarco was actually quite tough and could really bang. Power punching future champ Virgil Atkins stopped him late two slugfeasts, was down in both. Basilio was hurt early in both fights before taking over. Stopped the tricky Johnny Saxton for the title, first man to do it and Saxton would take the title from Basilio the following year. Tito at his best was pure brilliance but he´s going to be hit by DeMarco who scorned defence for offence to land his brutal left hook. This would also ensure Felix´s offensive arsenal would soon prove too much for Tony. Someone mentioned Trinidad-Campas before, pretty much agree with that. Would be cracker. Would love to see how Tito did with Basilio over 15. Not sure who would win that one. This content is protected
