Tony Mundine dies from a heart attack

Very sad. RIP Champ.

Sad news. Mundine was a very good light heavyweight contender. Prayers to his family

 

Fought Griffith, Moyer, Monzon, Luis Rodriguez, Bennie Briscoe, a fella with two big balls.

Yes he was.

 

Solid fighter with a career to be proud of. Rest in peace warrior.

 

Minor interesting note — around the early 1970s, Tony captured the Australian heavyweight championship … whilst weighing 164 1/4 or thereabouts.

His opponent came in around 210.

While it may be a case of a small talent pool on the island, that’s still a very impressive feat … more like something you’d expect in the 1870s.

In fact, Tony held the Aussie middleweight, light heavyweight, cruiserweight and heavyweight crowns — the latter three simultaneiously.

He also held Commonwealth championships at middle and light heavyweight.

 

Sad news. Guy fought everyone in his era. Fearless fighter.

Though it was a few years back when I saw the vision, Tony appeared to be keeping himself in great shape into his more senior years and of course he had an impressive build in his hey day.

Back in the days of FTA boxing, Australia had a show called TV Ringside hosted by Ron Casey.

It featured many well known Aussie fighters including Tony and also local up and coming talent otherwise.

Tony was a very good and exciting fighter, very fast hands and a good puncher.

Unfortunately his chin wasn´t the best.

By all accounts looked superb outboxing Emile Griffithm just couldn´t cope with Monzon or Briscoe. No disgrace there.

Emile Griffith, Denny Moyer, Bunny Sterling, Bunny Johnson, Lonnie Harris, Luis Vinales(beat Briscoe in a huge upset), Max Cohen, Matt Donovan, Pete McIntyre and Mustafa Wasajja.
