It's widely said that Marvin Hagler's losses (Watts, Monroe, Leonard) and draws (Seales and Antuofermo) were robberies. Were any of the losses or draws legitimate, or is anyone of the mind that Hagler should have been undefeated? Had this been the case and he finished career 67-0, how would he be viewed in boxing history. Considering him having a great record, but never moving up the weight classes to be a multiple time champion?
The Monroe loss wasn't a robbery Hagler lost that fight pretty clearly. The Leonard fight wasn't a robbery either just a close decision that could've gone either way. The draw to Seales was close from the reports i've seen and it seems like a draw wasn't a bad result. Antuofermo was a controversial draw for sure but I don't see it as the worst result Antuofermo came on pretty strong in the later rounds. The Watts loss i'd agree Hagler was hard done by and deserved the nod. But to answer the question no Hagler didn't deserve to be 67-0.
Monroe has a legit victory. Leonard got into his head and barely nicked one as well. Thats it for me. The Antuofermo draw is a joke in my book. If I remember reading about it correctly the Seals fight is a hometown draw. Theoretically you could say Hagler has 2 losses and no draws.
The Watts fight was close. The Leonard fight proved that Leonard was not quite Hagler, even as apparently faded as he was. the fight with Vito, that too could have gone to Marvin. You could make a strong case that in reality hagler 65 - 1 - 1
Even Marvin didn’t dispute the Monroe loss. He got his nose busted in the second round and said he couldn’t breathe (well) the rest of the way. There was a quote from Marvin after that fight that I cannot put my finger on, but it was something like: “I’m young and there‘s a lot of things I still have to learn; seems like he already learned those things,” haha.
Absolute best case for Hagler would be 65-1-1, I think. Hagler admitted he lost to Monroe in their first fight so then we’re left with the Antuofermo draw, the Seales draw and the Watts and Leonard defeats. Most seem to think he was robbed against Watts and he deserved the win over Antuofermo. The Leonard fight is so divisive but you could argue for Marvin. The Seales draw I’m not sure about. In reality, he avenged every blemish on his record except the Leonard defeat and he’ll always have people swearing he won that one too. I don’t think those blemishes on his record hurt his rep too much at all, really.
Only got outclassed once in his career to Monroe that's pretty amazing. He knew when to hang them up too
Monroe loss wasn’t controversial. The loss to Watts, I thought Hagler won, although I haven’t seen it in many years. Same with the draw against Vito I scored the Leonard fight 114-114
The Seales draw had the most curious scoring I’ve ever seen — the two judges who had it even both had it 99-99. Think about that — one round apiece and eight even, lol. Have to wonder if they even agreed on the two rounds each scored as not even. FWIW, the ‘decisive’ judge had it 98-96 for SRS. The AP account says Ray won the first half of the fight boxing well and Marvin came on in the second half. Sounds like probably a fair verdict even though it was arrived at in a completely bizarre fashion.
I have not watched the Vito fight in a long time and can't comment I felt he made a big mistake giving away the first four rounds against Leonard fighting orthodox. Its very difficult to giveaway a third of fight and expect to win a close decision. I used to think Hagler got hosed, over time I have come to re-asses this opinion
Not seen Seales Draw so I don’t know about that one. Can’t remember how controversial I read it to be either. Thought he beat Watts and lost to Monroe. Leonard won, sorry Mahv. Vito draw was fair enough really, but also been a long time I watched it. For all of Haglers rhetoric about having to ko the champ etc, well he didn’t do so v Antuofermo and Vito came on stronger than Hagler did agaainst Leonard.
