    just depends what the window of time is that we think is reasonable for a ref to step in if a fighter still seems to have enough awareness to attempt to avoid. He was still live in there but needed putting out of his misery to put it bluntly, whether a left hook or a ref wave. He may have recovered if given enough time but unlikely.

    We always coached our guys that the ref cannot read your mind — if you have been hurt and the other guy is teeing off (ESPECIALLY if you’re on the ropes) — expect to be stopped if you aren’t throwing back or holding. I’d rather hug the guy like an octopus and lose a point (and gain time to clear my head while the ref deducts it) than get stopped because I’m not doing anything.

    We emphasized ‘don’t tell me you weren’t hurt and they shouldn’t have stopped it if you aren’t throwing back — if you’re not hurt, you should be fighting the guy.’
