What if Jeff Chandler had moved up to challenge Wilfredo Gomez on that night ,instead of Lupe Pintor? 15 Rounds. 122 Lbs.
I've seen 3 Chandler fights in the last week after not having watched him in at least 15 years. They guy was really, really good for a relatively short time. Kinda like a bantamweight Curry. It seemed that Gomez was more of a headhunter, but Chandler thin body would have to be an inviting target. Chandler wasn't tested to the extent Pintor was versus Zarate, so I'd have to say Gomez stops him late. I do think it would be every bit as hard as the Pintor fight for Gomez.
I think Gomez would have stopped Chandler in 12 or 13, the Gomez of the Zarate fight would have stopped Jeff in 6.
I think Chandler's boxing skills were at least sharp enough to make him last the distance. If Gomez could not catch him early. It would be a long tough fight. Gomez in a close, but unanimous decision.
I think Chandler and Pintor are a little underrated hisorically. The winner of the fight between them that should've happened, I think would deserve mention in the top batamweights argument.
Gomez, for that short time in the late 70's was a great, great fighter. He had it all. He was at his absolute peak in the Zarate fight. He reminded me of a clever, powerful jungle cat.
I'm not going to totally write off Chandler here. Gomez was well declining, and i wonder whether Chandler might have had that extra level when facing such a challenge. He was a great fighter that needed this match or Pintor for us to truly gauge him.
Gomez for me, Chandler was a quality fighter so it's clearly not easy for Gomez. But i do think Gomez would be better at all ranges and that would be the difference, not allowing Chandler to dominate with his jab, and showing his true skills when things are at closer quarters.
Spot on! I know a lot of people on here know Gomez, but am not sure as many remember chandler. One of the great boxers no one remembers (fits in right along with Brian Mitchell for me). Jeff was looking to move up (according to jeff in various interviews) and fight Gomez following the 2nd Solis fight....Not sure how true this is, but Chandler says that Solis and Gomez were good friends and that during the weigh in Gomez came into the room. Jeff claims he said "What are you looking at....I'm coming for you next!"...he also says that Gomez went pale, even though he does not know if Gomez knew what he said... Now I doubt that Gomez would be scared of jeff or anyone else for that matter, as I am a big appreciator of his work as well. Let me be the biased homer, and take jeff by a hard fought UD!
Chandler never proved he could hang and fight above 120 pounds.... Chandler was a natural 118 pounder for the most part... I used to have a KO mag interview with Chandler and he said he'd eat a Big Mac, Fries and a Coca-Cola several times a week and still make 118 with ease... But Chandler looked shot against Richie Sandoval when he lost his title there... Gomez stops Chandler at 122.... MR.BILL
