Greatest Australian boxing families!

Classic Forum are running a thread on Famous Boxing Families, and of course it's dominated by Yanks & Mexicans over there!

How about we give the great Aussie boxing families some recognition here in our own forum!


I posted the SANDS brothers over there and thought I'd post it here to kick things off. DSS and SALLYWINDER have also been giving the Aussies a push over there.

 

If Australian aboriginal brothers the SANDS aren't the most famous family in boxing history they ought to be! The 5 Sands brothers became known as the Fighting Sands Brothers for good reason:

3 of the SANDS brothers won national titles:

DAVE SANDS - wins 97 (63 by KO) losses 10 (2) and 1 draw.
ALFIE SANDS - wins 88 (64 by KO) losses 47 ( and 11 draws.
RUSSELL SANDS - wins 35 (10 by KO) losses 19(12) and 4 draws.

Another brother RITCHIE, also known as Percival, fought for an Australian title amongst his 45 wins (36 by KO) 36 losses (19 by KO) and 7 draws record.

Last, but not least, CLEM, compiled a record of 46 wins (36 by KO), 50 losses (8 by KO) and 4 draws which included winning a state (NSW) title.

DAVE SANDS was by far the stand-out of the brothers winning Australian middleweight, light-heavyweight and heavyweight championships (at one stage holding all 3 simultaneously), and Australasian light-heavyweight and British Empire middleweight championships.

Fammo's family is an interesting one, though not Australian.

As we know Johnny Famechon, though born in Paris, lived in Oz from about the age of 5 (?) and went on to win the world featherweight title.

His father Adre Famechon had 21 wins, 18 losses and 3 draws as a welterweight, fighting first in France and later at Sydney & West Melbourne stadiums amongst others, in Australia.

Uncle Ray Famechon had a distinguished record as a featherweight for 100 wins, 14 losses and a draw, but didn't fight in Australia.

And his other uncle Emile had 14 wins, 24 losses & 6 draws as a flyweight, including a sprinkling of bouts in Australia.

 

Briggsy's book was a ripper HURICN. Must try and get hold of the Waters one.

The BRIGGS boys ought to get a mention here too:

PAUL had 26 wins from 30 fights. Held the Aust light heavyweight title, and had two cracks at Adamek for the WBC world light heavy title. Was definately world class Paul. Pity his recent health problems bought about a premature retirement.

NATHAN has 20 wins from 25 fights. Briefly held the Aust heavyweight title in 2001, and has challenged Col Wilson a couple of times for it since. Col & Bob might be making way pretty soon (they can't go on forever - can they?), and Nathan at 33 might get another go at it.
