A couple more for the books. Kevin and Tony Mundine and Anthony Mundine. George and Dick Blair and son Kirk
DSS - I didn't realise that Tony's (Snr) brother Kevin boxed - hardly surprising really though. Looked Kevin up - two years younger than Tony - he had 8 wins from 16 bouts. Interestingly, a bloke called Jaime Pimentel, who used to write for Fighter Magazine started writing a book on Tony (Snr) in 1988. I think it was going to be called The Gentle Man . But I'm not sure if he ever got around to finishing it and having it published? Never seen it around.
Both Kelly gangs were hard boys: Glen & Kevin both fought for World Titles. Light heavy Glen got to 28 wins & a draw before Roy Jones Jnr & Briggsy put any losses on his record. Kevin fought for the WBA light middle weight title. Dan & Ned were both unbeaten until Glenrowan.
Didn't see the fight. Notice it was a UD - but probably 3 yank judges! Reid didn't hang around long. Won the title in about his 10th fight. Lost it to Felix Trinidad, and retired inside 20 pro fights.
Reid had a lazy eye which used to close during fights and struggled to see certain punches coming. It was horrifying to watch an obvious talent and Olympic Gold medallist go down the gurgler. However both eyes were open when Kev Kelly got him a beauty and dropped him. Kev Kelly is a true credit to the sport. He is a foreman down at the wharves in Botany and his company of 500 odd staff recently ran a 2 months "biggest loser" competition with a $2000 prize. The wharfies really got into it with massive group jogs but he played possum for 2 weeks, even openly and nonchalontly eating junk food in the staff cafe to throw off the punters. Once a few braggarts had triumphantly posted their encouraging early cycle weight losses, Kev hit the gym for 6 weeks and blew the part timers away with his intensity. In the last week of the competition a mate of mine was working out alone in the company gym late one night and he went to take a Sauna and who should he discover but Kev, off the seat on the Stationary bike, in a rain jacket, climbing the Pyrenees, trying to shake off the last stubborn pounds. He lost 15 kg and scooped the cash from nowhere. Once a boxer always a boxer.
Good to hear Kev Kelly is keeping well! The BOWEN's both won Australian titles. Cliff BOWEN won the Aust MW title and son Jimmy BOWEN won the Aust super BW title.
Someone has to put the ELLIS family up. LESTER ELLIS was of course the champ of the family, winning a string of Australian, Commonwealth & World records from his 41 wins (KO 28) and 8 (KO 5) losses. Lester was the Master Blaster, and brother KEITH ELLIS is the master trainer (just ask Keiffy how many Australian title winners he's trained!). HEATH ELLIS (nephew of Lester & Keith), is travelling along nicely at 7 wins(KO 4), 1 loss and a draw. Heath has an IBF Pan Pacific Welterweight title fight coming up against a Thai who's lost his last 10 fights. So hopefully Heath will be wearing that belt very shortly. Heath's father Neil and Keith Snr (cuts) are also involved with Heath's career.
I think he is working as a private trainer in La Perouse. He was in unbelievably good shape the last time I saw him but NSW did not overturn his ban and he's moved on. A good thing I think.
Time we put some more Victorian boys up! The ROPIS brothers started out back in the TV Ringside/Festival Hall days. Both went on to win Australian titles. MATT, the elder brother, started out as a jockey. As a young bloke he fought in the tent at the Royal Melbourne Show, including a match against Baby Cassius - now theres a quality tent fight! Matt fought as a pro from 1971 to 1977, and had a record of 19 wins (7 KO), 14 losses (4 KO) and 5 draws. He won the Australian lightweight title, and fought some of the greats including Manny Santos, Wally Carr, Flash Malcolm, Billy Moeller, Andy Broome. Plus he fought Baby Cassius a couple of times as a pro as well. Matt has actually made a rare appearance or two on this forum. Younger brother FRANK (the tank) started as a pro a year later than Matt (1972) and fought on until 1984. He won the Australian welterweight title, and fought amongst others legends in Hec Thompson & Barry Boy Michael, plus Russell Sands & Brian Janssen, and Flash Malcolm, Andy Broome & Baby Cassius (all of whom also fought brother Matt).
