Who was the better fighter?

 

good one. tough call but on longetivity i'd say chavez.

 

Chavez was the better fighter but PBF was the better boxer imo. Chavez is greater though.

 

H2H, hard to split them. Especially at 130.

Everyone will say "oh but Chavez is Castillo but better" which is true but at 130 Mayweather was a speciman.

Plus Castillo will probably be a top15 or even 10 alltime lightweight when he retires, so Chavez isnt that much better, the gap isnt enourmus between them.

Castillo could possibly be considered top 25 of all time at LW. But top 10 or 15? Not a chance in hell.

To answer the question, I'd favor Floyd at 130, as I feel he was at his best there, while Chavez generally improved technically at 135 and 140. At 135 I'd favor Chavez.

Chavez was the better fighter and I'd favor him head to head. He had the attack and mentality to hit whatever was available to hit. I think it would be a very tough fight. Mayweather would be doing his shoulders rolls and Chavez would take the body, arms, whatever. I think Chavez was considerably better than Castillo.

 

Records, achievements, even to some degree class of competition, (which is something usually held against Chavez), longevity all favor JC here.

If they were to meet head to head, Floyd's speed and elusiveness would give Chavez some problems, but as natonic said, when Floyd was doing his shoulder rolls Chavez would be banging him anywhere that was in reach, including probably attacking the body more than a lot of Floyd's opponents did. So unless Floyd was willing to get out of his usual potshotting, semi-stationary style, Chavez could grind him down.

If Floyd did move, it would be a long, frustrating night for Julio.

 

Mayweather 8-4 or 10-5, Floyd's going to hit, move resent and counter all night. It may even be a complete shut out.

People will bring up the 1 close fight with Castillo, but how about Chavez having his head boxed off against Whitaker and Taylor? Mayweather beat Castillo but even if he hadnt he won wide in the rematch. He beat other similar styled fighters like Hatton, Corrales, Chavez, Gatti, Ndou, Delahoya with little problems. don't foregt most of those were bigger, stronger and harder hitting than Chavez even if they werent always as refinned

 

I'm not sure. I used to favour Chavez strongly, but this may have been because I thoroughly disliked Mayweather. However, now Floyd has retired, I appreciate him more. I've been watching his fights back and I have discovered a new-found love of his fighting style.

At 130, Mayweather would be anything but 'semi-stationary, pot-shotting' as another poster suggests. This isn't how Mayweather fought at 130 at all, and he certainly wouldn't once he had felt one bodyshot from Chavez. I think PBF-JCC at 130 would be a storming battle, but I think Mayweather would emerge a clear winner on points. He was deceptively strong at 130 and could outbox Chavez with emphasis on lateral movement and rapid combinations.

At 135 or higher, I just don't know. At gunpoint, I'd say Mayweather, but only if he employed the right tactics. However, Chavez is so much better than anyone PBF ever fought. I can't call this one with much confidence. It's a fight I'd really love to see.

 

I think Whitaker was better than Floyd at 135 and a southpaw to boot. Taylor is a little underrated in my opinion. He may not have had the defense of Floyd, but his offense (speed, combination punching) was great. He took a heavy beating despite outboxing Chavez.

I honestly don't think any of those guys were EFFECTIVELY better punchers than Chavez. Maybe Gatti was a bigger puncher but that didn't mean much against Mayweather. De La Hoya is the only one on that list even close to the same class as Chavez.

 

Mayweather at 130 for me, though Chavez was some hungry animal there, look in his eyes after he won his first title (i think it was that fight), while he's still in the ring. At 135 i believe we saw the very best Julio, and of course there was the Castillo fights there, which means Chavez could possibly beat Mayweather there by my reckoning, but one must be objective and also look at the Mayweather-Castillo rematch. Although Chavez and Castillo have different tendencies in the ring, their styles are similar.

Hard to split them in terms of legacy i actually think, Chavez with the lingevity, Mayweather immense h2h, and both with good resumes who at their very best weight and peaks, fought more or less the best and right contenders out there, a true statement...... without nitpicking

 

Mayweather didn't look that good in the rematch with Castillo either imo.

Very tame and still competitive fight that he won by about three points.
