Calzaghe causes Hagler trouble no matter what the result. Marv's best chance is to maul (like the Hearns fight) him, by taking Joe out of his comfort zone. I simply cannot see Hagler outboxing Calzaghe. PS. Marv had severly overrated 'boxing skills' IMO
How so? Hagler was an excellent boxer. Better technically than Calzaghe for sure, though Calzaghe would cause him problems in other areas.
You really think so? I just cant see how they were. He was very skillful offensively and defensively. I think the closer the middleweight the better for Hagler. I dont think Marvin lets this fight get away from him but at the same time the awkwardness, workrate and speed of Joe would pick up a lot of rounds as Hagler picked his spots. Maybe he waits to long. I think in a 3 fight series Joe would take the first, I think he would jump on Marvin and just throw to many at awkward angles for him to settle. The next two would be very close affairs I think. Id lean towards Hagler to come back and figure out a way to deal with Joe, like you Nem he will probably maul Joe and shut down his offence. Though Marvin was a physically impressive middleweight who could easily fit in at 168 IMO (though he would be fairly short). The higher north the weight of this fight is the better for Joe.
Calzaghe has a natural weight advantage which will help him endurance wise, even though it is not a massive difference. But I think he will have a hard time exploiting a fighter as well-rounded as Hagler, and more importantly, as busy and willing to throw punches. There is nothing for Calzaghe to take advantage of; no laziness to capitalise on, no slowness, lack of return fire or vulnerable chin. An accurate southpaw jab, not Calzaghe's, will be the best punch in this fight.
Well, some will tell you non-stop pressure over 15 rounds bothers Hagler. Antofurmo supposedly had him somewhat tired at the end of their first fight, which is why he was able to even get that questionable draw in the first place.
It's a clsoe fight. Hagler was a small MW who had problems with pressure early in his career. But I think as he became more aggressive Calzaghe would play into his hands. The come forward approach that has seen Joe decked in his last 2 outings would see him copping counters all night long. Hagler did cut though and that could be a problem for him. When it comes to it Joe will be up against a great jabber who likes to counter. barring a bad cut i think Hagler wins on points.
It's not the pressure but the speed of Joe ... tough fight to call but I like Marvin ... could go either way based on Cal's speed, volume, size and exceptional stamina ...
I like Hagler in a close one. I think he'd get credit for landing the more meaningful punches. p.s. Calzaghe would blow up the Compubox computers fighting Ayala.
Think Ayala could even take Chuck Norris in his prime, on seciond thought not even Ayal could take Chuck:ko
