and someone like Freddie Roach knows what he's talking about.

Well there may have been equally skilled or even more skilled fighters at lower weights, like Pernell Whitaker, but Toney has to be the most natural skilled fighter from MW upwards in this era. Roy Jones comes close, but depended much more on his superior athleticism and reflexes - Toney just had the fight in his blood, the ring is his natural habitat. Think what you want of his behaviour outside the ring (which is only a show, Toneys a nice friendly guy when the cameras are shut off), the man is an artist. That's why true boxing fans enjoy so much watching Toney fight while the fake ones who can't appreciate the art of boxing and just want a quick KO only see a fat man.

It's a pity that Toneys lack of discipline prevented him from fulfilling his full potential, he could've been a top5 ATG with the work ethic of B-Hop, Pac or said Roy Jones. He has no one but himself to blame for all the setbacks that happened in his career.

Ok, now let the Thadzi > Toney, 'Peter schooled Toney' etc. comments begin..

Every great boxer's career had something that kept them from "fulfilling potential"...It's not an excuse bro.

In the end, Toney will be viewed as a guy who had a great career....But in comparison to Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones (skillwise); he's not in their ballpark.

    Just my opinion sir.

We always knew he is talented.

Discipline isn't his strong side though, and Tony will upset him.

Yet some people still do not want give him credit for fighting the big guys (Peter, Rahman, and now Thompson) and putting on respectable performances. They only point to his record.

Even if you do not win, it can add to your legacy. Take for example Whitaker-DH. Even, if Whitaker lost it still added to his legacy.

At the moment, Jones probably ranks ahead of him. But, Toney is not far behind and could catch up very soon.

Toney is obviouisly a class fighter, at his peak he is one of my faves to watch, but he does lack dedication and with a boxer of his talent, coming into the ring in terrible shape is like sitting on a winning lotto ticket and not cashing it in.

If Toney gets past Thompson, I really hope Haye decides to fight him.
A Toney-Haye matchup at that point would be more interesting than Waldo-Povetkin or Vitali-Gomez.

Your opinion is ****. Roy Jones more skilled than James Toney? Not in a million years, his skill level is comparable to the guy in your avatar, all Jones really had was speed. If what you meant by not in their ballpark was that Toney was on a much higher level then i apologise and agree.

Toney, without a doubt, has an almost impenetrable defense and excellent counterpunching. What he does not have is discipline and widespread commercial appeal. When he gets into the ring now, I see "a fat man", but I also see a fat man that was giving Rahman a boxing lesson before Rahman quit because he complained he couldn't see out of an eye that looked perfectly functional. Even the doctor seemed incredulous when Rahman said he couldn't see.

Oh well. Toney has been called one of the greatest middle/supermiddleweights of the modern age. I think he could have cemented that if he stayed below 175. 4 of his 6 losses have come above 175. Imagine what we'd be saying about Toney right now if his only losses up to this point had been one loss to a peak RJJ at supermiddleweight and one MD loss to Montell Griffin, to give him a record of 74-2.
