Which is Quarry's best effort?

It's either Foster or Spencer IMO (I voted Spencer, which I believe was his peak performance). For some of the others (Lyle, Shavers) he was actually past his prime IMO.

 

His fights against Patterson are almost never discussed on here. It's strange, almost as if they're matches lost in limbo for both fighters.

 

I've never seen both in their entirety.

I always hear that the scoring is controversial, but I never hear in whose favor.

.................I thought he boxed very well against Spencer, which belied his "slugger" image. He was quite skilled.

 

I liked Quarry's 1 round K.O. of Shavers.

Shavers in his prime goes 1 rd with Quarry and 15 rds with Ali (and Ernie might have won).

Quarry had the balls to wade in with a huge puncher and when he hurt Shavers, just kept coming until he finished him. In the CBS telecast, you can hear his Manager Gil Clancy saying "Careful Jerry, careful" as Shavers and Quarry exchange heavy stuff along the ropes.

This fight was suppose to have given Quarry a shot at Foreman in June, but the fight never happened. (and I 'm a Foreman fan)

 

Better for Quarry than Foreman. And I'm a Quarry fan.

Shavers is a bit chinny, but that Quarry went balls-out and met him on his terms was quite impressive.

I voted for the Lyle win. A good one, for sure.

The people who thought those fights were controversial thought Patterson should've won.

 

the Foster fight was impressive because of the Foster buildup and Lyle was also built up as an animal, the shavers fight was an easy onr but in retrospect Shavers came back and is now known as a monster on this board.....I would have to say Foster,,,Quarry dominayed Lyle...Foster through off some sparks 24-0 24 KOS

 

Quarry was at his peak up until about 1970-'71. That was before he physically matured and became somewhat thicker of build and depended more on slugging and less on his earlier counterpunching style. The Lyle fight was a kind of reversion to the earlier style with more skill involved and less slugging. I think he was just physically less inclined to the earlier style of say, the Spencer fight in his career from '72 onward. I voted for his fight with Spencer, but the Lyle fight was probably just as good.

 

I watched the two Patterson fights, and because of the slightly screwy California points system that gave so much importance to the two knockdowns, Patterson was twice robbed, I say. In both fights Patterson came back strongly and finished better than Jerry. The fights were much closer than say, Floyd's fights with Chuvalo and Bonavena, but I think Floyd deserved them both. Patterson, by the way, showed his class and sportsmanship after both of the two fights, as well as the "loss" against Jimmy Ellis, by not cpmplaining, and congratulating both men after being robbed.

 

The Patterson-Chuvalo fight was the first fight I can remember watching on tv, and I thought Patterson clearly won it, and anyone disputing the decision must have been watching a different fight or something. I thought Patterson won many of the rounds by close margins, but there was no doubt to me that he deserved them. He fought under great pressure, outboxing Chuvalo and also landing many fast flurries but also many really hard shots, much harder than did Ali in both of his fights with the Canadian. I've seen the fight since then on tape, and I'm impressed at how Patterson proved his toughness under fire after the Liston disasters, and did such a neat job in outboxing Chuvalo. After the decision, by the way, the ever gracious Patterson tried to congratulate Chuvalo on the tough fight he put up, was spurned by the Canadian, who was very angry and a bit unsportsmanlike in thinking he was robbed. Again, a classy Patterson showing how a fighter, or any athete should behave in victory as well as defeat. Over the years, I'm more and more impressed at the example of Floyd Patterson, and what a humble, good sportsman he was, never bitching or complaining, or acting like a buffoon before or after a fight.

 

I find it hard to judge when Quarry was at his best, due to the amount of times he was written off and called a bum before beating his usually heavily favoured opponent.
That said, I'd say it was probably the Lyle or Foster win.
