    Pacquiao weirded by weigh-in difference
    12/06/2008 | 05:34 PM
MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao was sure he was at 146 pounds for the final weigh-in.

So it surprised him to see he came out four pounds lighter.

Pacquiao tipped the scales at 142 pounds, way off the weight he and his team were expecting.

"Yes, a little bit of a surprise. Seems the scale got calibrated," Freddie Roach told Manila-based journalists inside the press room on Friday after the weigh-in.

Shortly after the weigh-in, Pacquiao went back to his room and used a different scale. He came in at 145.5 pounds, the same weight he had in the morning after breakfast, according to Roach.

Pacquiao was amazed at the difference, disclosing the night before and just an hour before the official weigh-in that he both checked in at 146 pounds.

"I didn't do anything to reduce weight, so I don't know why I came in at 142?" Pacquiao said. "It's hard to be suspicious but as you can see, there's a difference between how I weighed out there and here."

Pacquiao said if there was a four-pound difference between his two "weigh-ins", it could be the same for de la Hoya. "So does that mean Oscar was at 149 pounds?"

A clause in the contracts signed by both Pacquiao and de la Hoya will have de la Hoya paying a $3-million penalty for every excess pound over 147 pounds.

Pacquiao said he didn't want to make a big deal out of the situation. "I don't want to make that an excuse for whatever happens."

    Roach agreed.

"Maybe the scale … I'm not sure. But I'm not accusing anything (sic)," said Roach, who incidentally, also got a positive response from the Nevada State Athletic Commission later in the day, allowing the use of one-inch tape for the boxer's hands instead of two inches.

"But it really doesn't matter to me," he added. "The fight's on. The fight's here."

    :yikes

That's a very dodgy sounding thing:-(...and I just cannot see Manny lying about something like this...:verysad

If this is true, then de la Hoya is the kind of conman that should be taken to court.:deal

But the difference is the same either way, and if they are actually heavier than the scales said then the difference is proportionally smaller.

Sure, but which is worse for Pacquaio? To fight a guy that weighed in at 148.5 and will come in at maybe 154 on the night, or to fight a guy that weighed in at 145 and will come in at 151.5 on the night, assuming that the weight gain is about the same? Remember that Pacman's coming in at 147 on the night...not more.

You'll have a lightweight fighting at welterweight against a light-middle weighing in at light-middle, instead of at welter-light-middle catchweight.

How much more unfair is that?:verysad

Absolute values are essential here because DLH is getting a big advantage from the extra weight - he gains power and stamina, whereas Pacquiao doesn't - he loses speed.

Many people predicted DLH would be weightdrained like hell, and would therefore have no power and stamina, but if he isn't...then Pacman's chances of winning are even lower!:verysad

...not to mention their financial agreement they had...with the 3 million/extra pound over 145 that DLH would weigh...

You are totally missing the point. The proportional difference is irrelevant in this matter, if the scales were showing numbers 4lbs too low, then Oscar did not make the weight. This would give him yet another advantage, if he wants to fight at 147 then he has to make 147.

Also, it would result in him owing a rather large sum of money for the contract stipulation that he would pay 'x' amount for every pound over the limit.

This is what happens when no sanctioning body was responsible. Who was in charge of the scales? Who can be taken to court if it's proven that the scales were dodgy? Golden Boy Promotions? I've never heard of anything like this happening before...it's very, very dodgy...doesn't even happen for crappy undercard fights, nevermind for "Dream Fights" totalling $USD 100 million!:-(

Yeah, but the fact of the matter is that it would mean De La Hoya is over the weight limit - It would mean he is a disgraceful cheat who's been too lazy to train himself down to the limit whereas Pacquiao is clearly inside no matter what way you look at it.

Don't think there's any cheating going on, I mean some people are taking it far here. I honestly believe that Roach was beyond shocked when he heard Oscar's weight, just take a good lookl at him when Oscar got on the scale, Roach was staring like he couldn't believe what he saw since he already said DLH will have difficulty making weight.

Even though that was the greatest weigh-in I ever saw it was still clear to me that Pac and his team showed no confidence there and I noticed Pacqiuao was slightly worried even when both were staring at each other. Of course that's always said at weigh-ins and I know it doesn't mean ****, just had to let it off I guess since this one was different than the others in my opinion.

Lopez, Medina, Ortiz, and Resto all came in at the limit.

I doubt all of them were 4 lbs overweight.

And Roach's point was the scales showed 3,5 lbs lighter. If it's true Oscar is 148,5,meaning he didn't make weight.
