First off, Manny fought a great fight, so props to him...but the reality is DLH was completely shot once he stepped between the ropes. As Freddie Roach stated, "He had no legs, was hesitant, he was shot." Hell, David Diaz put up more resistance than DLH. It's been a strange year to see this happen to very good fighters who were able to take punches from much bigger guys and better fighters, yet completely fold once they went back down in weight and/or were shells of their former selves against inferior opposition. When I say inferior I don't mean to slight Pacman or even Calzaghe, but at one time DLH was competitive for about 7 rounds with a near prime Hopkins, a prime Trinidad, prime Mosley, prime Mayweather, etc.... We saw this first with Chris Byrd, here's a guy who took shots from Ibeabuchi, Tua, Wlad, Vitali, Povetkin, Golota and Holyfield and yet Shaun George, a LHV with only 7 KOs to his ledger was able to beat Byrd worse then any of the guys previously mentioned. Byrd was a shot fighter once he stepped between the ropes against George. We saw it with RJJ against Calzaghe. Now many have said he's been shot since his losses to Tarver and Johnson, and to a degree that is correct, however it was painfully obvious to see in his fight against Calzaghe that he was merely a shell. The way he backed up into the corner with Calzaghe dropping his hands and begging for RJJ to punch at him, yet his body couldn't or wouldn't throw punches. Las night we saw the same thing with DLH and Pacman. DLH just couldn't throw punches, he was a shell with nothing left. He backed into a corner and absorbed punches like a punching bag, unable to even throw a decent jab. Yes, Pacman had something to do with it, but it was more what DLH wasn't able to do because he was a shot fighter, that became "old right before eyes." The same thing happened to Ali against Holmes, SRL against Norris, Tsyzu against Hatton, etc...Let's not get ridiculous and make this it to be more than it is. While Pacman certainly has a good chance against Hatton, he will be mauled by the elite WWs and that's no slight on Manny as guys like Margarito, Cotto, etc. are badass dudes. Like Freddie Roach said, there is no way he would have let Manny fight DLH from a few years ago, but he knew that DLH was shot, so he took the fight. Next on the list is Mosley. We already saw signs of this with Mosley against Mayorga...look for this to happen to Mosley as Margarito absolutely destroys him in 9 one-sided rounds with Mosley unable to offer anything back. Just like Chavez against DLH, what comes around goes around...will the same fate eventually catch up to Pacman in a couple of years?
De La Hoya didn't get old overnight, Chris Byrd lost a shed load of weight too quickly and Calzaghe is a lot better than Tarver or Johnson, which is why Jones looked worse against him, if you think he did.
Actually he did...He showed every sign of being a shot fighter and if you don't see that you are either A) Ignorant as **** or B) have never boxed before and don't **** about boxing. Byrd was shot, no question with the weigh affecting him as well, though he lost the weight naturally by running which puts much less strain on your body than cutting weight like wrestlers do. As for RJJ, how is Calzaghe better than Tarver prime for prime??? Tarver KO'd a prime or at least semi-prime RJJ and beat his ass in the 3rd fight. Johnson won every round of his fight with a younger RJJ and stopped him. That's much more impressive than Calzaghe's victory over a 39 yr old RJJ, without question.
he didnt get old "overnight" he ran into a ****ing buzz saw....... the buzz saw made him look like ****...... DLH did just fine almost shutting steve forbes out a few months ago..... pac gets the credit......
a fighter can get old overnight but you still need a great fighter to expose it. a fighter with the type of speed and power and agression pac-man has is all wrong for a guy like dlh at this stage of his career.
The Tarver that has never successfully defended a leigitimate title? Are you looking for a more detailed answer than 'in every way possible'? Whether he looked shot last night is not in dispute. For your claim that he got 'old overnight' to be correct he would have had to have shown none of those signs previously. I contend that he had.
Sorry, but he did...Pacman's own trainer said so himself, that's why he let Manny take the fight to begin with. You can be a fan of Manny's and give him props for the win (which I already did), but to deny that DLH wasn't completely shot is just ignorant. He had tons of openings, he just couldn't let his punches go. This was painfully clear. If anything, as seen in both the Forbes and Pacman fight, DLH got hit more than he ever has in his career. he was busted up by both guys and both were small punchers at WW. Yes, pacman doesn't hit that hard at WW, but the sheer amount of punches that he landed caused damage and hurt DLH. If he were fighting legit WWs like Cotto, Cintron, Margarito, etc...he would have been KTFO.
If it was seen in the Forbes fight as well, then he didn't get old overnight going into the Pacquiao fight then, did he?
I agree, but I think a lot of fighters would have been all wrong last night for DLH. Victor Ortiz, you know he who busted DLH up in sparring, would have been too much for DLH last night. More than anything, it wasn't the power or even the speed, DLH was like a deer stuck in headlights, his legs were stuck in molasses. It was the sheer volume. DLH couldn't do anything but cover up against the ropes in the later stages of the fight.
true, dlh looked done but dlh typically is competitve in his fights but vs. pac, he walked into a tornado. and dlh is used to seeing slick fighters. hes never seen an offensive power house like pac. so its combination of both dlh being old but also pac being too good.
Like Roach and many others said, you could see DLH slowing down in the Forbes fight as he was sloppy and was hit with shots he wouldn't normally get caught with. Your logic makes no sense by the way, if you are trying to insinuate that he was old against Forbes, then that makes it less impressive for Pacman. Reality is, he got hit way too much against Forbes, but most believed he had enough in the tank for Pacman. As seen from the 1st minute of the fight, it was obvious he had nothing. No snap on his punches, no bounce his step, no strength in his jab, no head movement, no shoulder rolls, no nothing.
Like I said, props to Pacman, obviously he had an effect on the outcome with his style, but the story of the night in my eyes was how far DLH was gone. Just like Chavez-DLH, it was painful to see how much Chavez had begun to break down, but some part of that had to do with DLH as well.
I'm not insinuating anything, it's your thread! I'm not sure you understand what 'logic' is though. You can't say that something is illogical because it doesn't achive the outcome you're looking for.
of course, dlh's age had alot to do with it. but if pac-man wasnt such a great fighter, dlh wouldnt have been batter into nsubmission like that. so its 50% pac, 50% hoya
You aren't even making a logical point with your last comment. There's nothing to achieve, just facts. Fact: DLH got busted up by Forbes and hit by more clean shots than usual, but won a lopsided decision. Fact: DLH got busted up by Pacman and got hit by more shots than ever before. Fact: Freddie Roach said Oscar was shot and couldn't pull the trigger before the fight even took place and that's why he let Pacman take the fight. DLH is shot and got old overnight.
