I accept that the terms 'ducked' and 'avoided' are somewhat loose and subjective in boxing; nevertheless, which great fighters would you most associate with such terms over the years? Langford Burley Charles (at light heavy) McCallum Briscoe Only a few there for starters. Any others? It probably gets done to death in most boxing circles but never mind.
Charley Burley is an obvious ATG with great names missing on his resume. Pretty sad we don't have much proofs on tape to justify that high ranking. Could he beat Robinson ? Maybe... Mike McCallum was notoriously avoided by the Fab 4 too. Too cagey and crafty for the money he could bring to the table. The risk wasn't worth it because at the time, he could've beat each and every one of Leonard, Duran, Hearns and Hagler, all of them were past their prime and looking for a few big name-big reward fights. A true pain in the ass to fight and all of them knew it.
Earnie Shavers, becaus ehe power was scary. Ray Robinson's manager made it a point to avoid Charley Burley because he felt Burley would embarrass him. The story goes something like this: "George Gainford, the manager of the peerless Sugar Ray Robinson, admitted he "bupassed" - read: "ducked" Burley - "because his style would have counteracted Robinson's" and asked Ray Arcel, "Can't you get me someone besides Burley?"
Langford and Greb. I know I know Greb won a title but he was beating champions easily as early as 1917 and didnt get an official title shot until the second half of 1923, six years and over 100 fights later. Never got a shot at the light heavy title which he deserved since 1917 and never got a shot at the heavy title despite fighting several elimination bouts for a title shot and winning.
HE turned down 6m to face DLH and 40% against FMJ, wasnt it him who walked from the Taylor rematch too (I had him winning I think) I'd go with HErol Graham from recent times, he went 35-0 while being avoided by many, was avoided by the best of British like Eubank, Benn, Watson. Him and McCallum/Kalambay were there own mini Murderers Row Witter was pretty much avoided, Hatton ducked him, he couldnt get fights with world class fighters and even managed to get to be Mayweathers mandatory. Not that Witter was that good but he was avoided. What about Vivian Harris, Mayweather/Hatton/Cotto all removed themselves from being his mandatory but he was hard to do business with and wasnt a draw
