What was more impressive? Jones-Ruiz or Pac-DeLaHoya?

Pacs wins was better, he jumped 2 weight classes but had only been at 135 for one fight. He also went up against a great fighter in DLH, Ruiz is very average.

Ruiz - Jones was somewhat easy to predict, DLH - Pac wasnt.

Assuming that that's true, does that necessarily mean that Oscar is the lesser fighter, or that Ruiz is simply fighting in a weaker division?

Let's look at it from the way in which the fight was fought.

Jones DID NOT press Ruiz. He was his usual safety first self.

Manny tore into DLH with control, yet like DLH bagged out Manny's mum and then pissed on a bible or something.

I fully believe Jones COULD have made Ruiz look like De La Hoya - It's Manny's thirst for the battle that puts him on top for me.

I little tough for me to pick. I think I'll wait until the hype of the aftermath wines down and I'm able to see it more objectively.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and because College finals and projects have been killing me I haven't been able to congratulate Manny, so I'll just do it now. Great victory by Manny Pacquiao, awesome performance, entertaining and impressive. Big props and congratulations to Manny on his biggest victory to date.

Let's do this via 12 round championship bout, shall we?

Round 1) Ruiz was a B level fighter at best in his career. 10-9 Pac
Round 2) DLH was an A level fighter throughout his prime. 10-9 Pac
Round 3) RJJ fought Ruiz who started his career 27lbs heavier than did RJJ. Pac fought DLH who started his career 23lbs heavier than he did. 10-9 RJJ
Round 4) DLH is 4-6 against Future HOFers that he fought. Ruiz is 1-3-1 against Future HOFers he fought. 10-9 Pac
Round 5) RJJ came into the fight as the favorite to win. Pac came into the fight as the underdog. 10-9 Pac
Round 6) DLH was at the end of his career vs Pac. Ruiz had reached his peak vs RJJ. 10-9 RJJ
Round 7) Pac stopped DLH. RJJ decisioned Ruiz. 10-9 Pac
Round 8 ) At the time of their respective victories, both Pac and RJJ were generally considered P4P best in the sport. 10-10
Round 9) RJJ career was slowing down 34yrs old(although we didn't realize it until he lost to Tarver). It seems the best is yet to come for Pac 29yrs old. 10-9 RJJ
Round 10) RJJ vs Ruiz was a title fight. Pac vs DLH was fight b/n two unranked WW. The historical significance goes to RJJ's win. 10-9 RJJ
Round 11) In the heavyweight fight, RJJ had to make all the adjustments to make the fight happen, Ruiz didn't have to make any. In the WW fight, Pac had to gain weight and DLH had to lose weight; both had to make adjustments to make the fight happen. 10-9 RJJ
Round 12) RJJ gave up 4" in reach, 3" in height, and 33lbs in weight against Ruiz. Pac gave up 6" in reach, 4" in height, and approx. 3lbs in weight against DLH. close 10-9 RJJ

And the winner is Roy Jones Jr.! 115-114 in a close decision.

    Very nicely done...!!!
But, I'm sure history will make a better case for Manny due to the many obvious reasons...

no he did not. Jones completly dominated every second of the fight wheras the toney fight was somewhat competitive. Not to mention that Toney's win means absolutly positivly less than nothing since he was not able to do it without steroids. Officially that win never even happened and rightfully so.

Excellent thread. I was thinking about this same question over the weekend.

I have to go with Pac-ODLH, because Oscar is the only man in boxing history to have won championships in 6 different weight classes and John Ruiz was a huggy bear fraud who was maneuvered into HW relevancy by Don King.

What's interesting is that both Jones and Pacquiao each went up exactly 36 pounds from their first professional fights' weights in these two historic matchups. Jones first fought at 157 pounds and was 193 against Ruiz. Pacquiao weighed 106 pounds for his first-ever fight and came in at 142 against ODLH.

Roy Jones' achievement against Ruiz deserves plenty of respect even if Ruiz himself was something of a joke. That said, I cannot compare an Olympic gold medalist and fighter of Oscar's caliber to this "gone in 25 seconds" guy:

    [yt]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/IKDvkcLe0K0&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/IKDvkcLe0K0&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/yt]

Pac completely destroyed ODLH in a way that nobody -- including split-decision winner PBF -- ever had and in a manner that virtually nobody predicted could happen. People were concerned about Roy's ability to take a HW shot, but they knew that if he could his vastly superior speed and skill would likely carry the day against Ruiz.

Pac wins this... dont believe the press release that dela hoya went in there weighing 147..thats BS! Pac went to the weigh in at 146lbs...but when he got there, guess what??..he weighed 142lbs.?! thats 4lbs below.. DLH weighed 145lbs...he probably weighed 149lbs, but just to be sure and not pay the sanction fees, he prayed that gravity lightened up a bit for him to make weight. Also, In the lower weights, there's almost no fat in the body to lose compared to the heavyweights... RJJ beating butterbean will not give him credit.

No he didn't, it's a NC and Toney was busted for using roids.
