Pavlik has been down more times than that. And you don't really correctly describe the circumstances of the second round against Taylor. Steve Smoger said he was one punch away from stopping the fight. If Smoger was one punch away, most referees would have already stopped it.
I have almost every Pavlik fight on DVD, against Taylor was the only time in his entire career minus one time when he like 19, that he actually was "hurt" He was dropped a few times because he took a good shot while moving and lost his balance ( Zuniga + McKart ) .... whether people want to admit it or not... Pavlik has a good chin and can take a shot. He just takes so many shots and has taken shots from good punchers, that it seems like he gets hurt more.
Crazy isn't it? Kelly has been seriously hurt once in 35 fights. He scored a hi-light reel KO after absorbing 15 unanswered shots, but some of these guys on ESB keep insisting his chin is shaky! In addition Froch's power is somewhat over rated. Omar Pittman, a guy with a 38% KO ratio, hurt Pascal. Froch hit Pascal with everything but the kitchen sink, and did not stop him. Kelly Pavlik has been troubled by speed and movement. Froch has neither. KP does not have great defense, but it's sure as hell good enough to stop that sloppy ass offense of Froch's. Pavlik/Froch would turn into a war pretty quickly, and Pavlik would tear his ass up. Froch appears to have a good chin, so KP may not knock him out, but there are few styles that would make Pav look as good as Froch would make him look.
On the contrary; I described the second round exactly how it happened. Pavlik "weathered the storm". WTF would you call it?
I'm not sure how anyone could question his heart or chin after the Taylor and BHop fights. I honestly have only seen Froch on grainy youtube videos. Does he always come straight ahead? If so it would be a real crowd pleasing fight!
Froch launches a two pronged attack: on his opponent with his fists, and on his opponents fists with his own face. Crowd pleasing fight would be right.
Froch = hands down low -- no head movement -- very little lateral movement. Jack Leow = "Double that ****ing jab," and against Froch it would work, and work big.
You can argue that both ways though. Both Froch and Pavlik have poor footwork, lack lateral movement, etc. I see Froch as having the better chin, Pavlik the better workrate. Power? I was somewhat worried by Jack Loew's comment that Pavlik didn't seem to have the same pop on his punches in the second Taylor fight at 166. That doesn't speak well of his ability to move up the weights (although it's not necessarily a clincher, your point about Pavlik growing into SMW is taken) Pavlik does have the better jab I think and I would favour him in a jab fest. I don't think he is capable of fighting that fight against Froch, I think it would just be a straight brawl. I favour Froch in that at present. These are still preliminary conclusions though. Froch v Pascal hardened up many of the thoughts I had about Froch - he does have a good chin, but doesn't have startling power at the top level, he can be outboxed and will always be troubled by speed. Seeing more of him against top opponents and seeing more of Pavlik at SMW would enable more definate conclusions.
