Anyone else really impressed with Carl Froch on Saturday? Could he be the man @ 168?

I have always liked Froch, and even though I expected him to win on Saturday, I was still very impressed with the quality of his performance against the formidable Jean Pascal.

Supermiddleweight is shaping up to be a pretty strong and exciting division just now, especially when you consider Kelly Pavlik and Arthur Abraham are just below and Bernard Hopkins, Joe Calzaghe and Chad Dawson are just above.

How far do posters think Carl Froch could go?

Would you back him to beat Kessler or Bute? Could he become the top dog at 168? Could he even beat Joe Calzaghe??

    No x 3.

He would have a punchers chance against Bute and not much chance at all against Kessler, imo.

He will be in some great tear ups though.

Well at least it's going to be free from your input then, so things are looking up! :D

What did you think of him v Pascal? Do you really only think he would have a puncher's chance v Bute?

extremely impressed. been a long time since i've enjoyed a good old fashioned slug-fest with some bigger guys. ( and on terrestrial tv as well ).
i knew he was talented, i didn't however realise he can take such a big shot so easily , which gives him a chance against any of the current crop with his power mixed in.
bit slow though on the down-side, and keeps his hands too low.
good to have another champ as well.love to see him fight taylor, then kessler if he can get past jermaine

Nah, he's got a good chin but at the moment he is a KO waiting to happen. He hangs his chin out like someone who wants to be knocked out. He's a fun fighter, a good fighter, but he's just not smart enough about his boxing.

He was out-boxing Pascal but then he had to get involved.

I'd love to see a re-match, though we probably won't, because it is a great fight. Cracking fight.

yeah he was using an excellant jab but seemed to forget about it often.
dunno about KO waiting to happen, that pascal was no feather-fist , he clocked him square several times.
dominate the division might be taking it a bit far, but you can hope. he certainly made alot of new fans at the weekend.

I'm impressed and unimpressed with Froch in equal parts.

His chin and power are extremely good. He could take big full shots from Pascal without being stunned and he didn't have to hit Pascal flush to hurt him in return.

However, his defence is still terrible. His reflexes are nothing special, yet he keeps his left hand so low his face is a magnetic for right hands. No one in boxing is fast enough to get away with a lack of defence indefinitely. Froch over relies on his chin to keep him out of trouble, but what happens if he fights someone who hits as hard as he does?

The second issue with his low hands is that he is forced to paw with his jab. He clearly has enough power to hurt with every shot he throws and by winging the jab up from his waist, he doesnt put any pop behind it, which limits the effectiveness of his follow up right hand. This was very evident against Pascal, who he failed to hit cleanly very often. A good solid jab would have allowed him to have landed flush right hands more often and potentially he could have taken Pascal out.

It was a great fight in terms of action. I refrained from predicting it beforehand due to not having seen enough of Pascal, I was impressed by both, but both obviously have glaring weaknesses when we compare them to the top dogs in the division.

Bute v Froch? I think only a puncher's chance overstates it a tad. Froch could win a points decision if he can really trouble Bute with his power, maybe knock him down once or twice. Otherwise Bute's speed is a big problem for Froch, as Pascal's was in snatches. I'm interested in seeing Bute's next fight to see if the Andrade 'knock out' affects him mentally at all, makes him more tentative or anything - obviously he wasn't ko'd from the point of view of the rules, but the punch amounted to the same thing - at any other point of the fight it would have lead to a stoppage.

This was something that I noted also. Interesting that Froch said in the postfight interview that he could 'beat anyone with his long jab' or something to that effect. I think that's highly optomistic. Froch has the kind of stature that you think would lend itself to a great stiff ramrod jab, strange to see it flicked out from the waist.

He hangs his chin and drops his lead hand, he is a KO waiting to happen, he is exciting to watch and deserves his chance at the big time, he may well go on and have a big win ,he seems to be in his prime but i can't see him being a great champion as his boxing skills/defence is not good enough.
Great fight on the weekend, wish him all the best but he aint no superstar.

i thought his jab looked good in parts, poor in others. he seems like a rough diamond but at 31, he really should have honed his skills.

He evidently see's it that he has a good jab, but in reality he makes poor use of it.
