Add losses against Calzaghe and, say, Cloud or Diaconu, to Dawson's current resume and tell me how good it looks then.
Trouble with beating US Hypejobs like Dawson is, after you do it, they just claim they never rated them in the first place.
he mind as well retire beating dawson isnt going to do **** for him dawson is overrated and beating bhop he already did he should have tried to cement his legacy earlier in his career
Beating Dawson would be better for Joe's legacy for a few reasons. 1 - He has already beat Hopkins even though it was a close decision. 2 - He hasnt fought any young, hungry contenders in a while. 3 - Dawson is a totally different type of fighter then a Hopkins or even a Jones Jr. so beating him will show more of Joe's versatility and talents. 4 - Dawson is taller then Joe and has a clear physical advantage in some ways and that would be new to Joe and if he could overcome that it would speak volumes. 5 - Dawson is considered by some to be the future of the 175 pound division, and to top it all off he is UNDEFEATED. These reasons are why beating Chad Dawson would add more to Joe's legacy then another win over a 44 year old Hopkins.
Another win over Hopkins would be meaningful dont get me wrong, just not as much as beating Dawson at this point in time. However I agree that Dawson is overrated, at least until or if he can prove himself agasint more top quality opposition.
Nothing really, whats up with all the Calzaghe threads??? He will never be considered as an ATG, he will be remembered as a guy from Wales who liked to slap his opponents. Definitely a great fighter but thats where it ends...
It would still look fine. He will have fought a peak fighter who had beaten three top-5 fighters in the weight class in his previous 5 fights. Plus, how would it look worse than Hopkins if he lost to Calzaghe again? Hopkins still ain't getting younger and already clearly but closely lost to Calzaghe once before in a boring ass fight that nobody would want to watch again. The only true LHW Hopkins has beaten is Tarver, who was equally dominated by Dawson. This isn't a situation like Lacy, where he hadn't fought any well-established fighters. Johnson and Tarver were already established as world-class, and Adamek has subsequently established himself as world-class.
I agree with your point, I just have difficulty believing that you would actually follow that approach if presented with it. I can almost smell your 'Hopkins was shot, he got (even) old(er) overnight' threads now.
This is true. If Calzaghe outclasses Dawson they would soon be saying Dawson was a nobody and criticizing Joe for fighting him ! Dawson would be listed along with Lacy as "another bum" Calzaghe chose to fight !
Hopkins still has his skills. He hasn't shown that they have diminished at all yet, not in the Pavlik fight or the Calzaghe or any before, it is merely stamina and workrate that's his problem, understandably. If Calzaghe penetrated his defence, landed a lot of clean punches, won rounds clearly through skill and not just ineffective volume flurrying, I wouldn't be able to say anything but that he had proved he has the skills to match a master boxer. But if they fight again, that won't happen, as he doesn't!
the paradox with calzaghe's career isn't what would do more for it but what could have done more for it. imagine you're a teenager in 15 years time. joe calzaghe retired undefeated and he beat chris eubank, roy jones and bernard hopkins. in 15 years time the term "undefeated" will be the first thing off the lips of green boxing fans and these wins will accompany it. fair enough eubank was a stepping stone fight at the time, but when this kid comes forward and naaively tries to sell this "wall of stone" defence are you going to build up the names he beat at the time they fought them or are you going to put things in context and say that the biggest names on his resume were well past their prime and total over 100 years when he fought them?
to cement his place in the hall of fame Calzaghe should beat Pacquiao at 175lbs and then we can start saying he s got nothin left to prove haha
Since when did the opinion of 15yr olds have a bearing on ATG lists. I remember scratching my head on the lofty status of Marciano and Galaxy for example, but it has no bearing where the Boxing hierarchy place them. Think a few people are overplaying there role in the grand scheme of things here. Even if Calzaghe retired today, as thin as his resume is, consensus will have him between 75-100. Fighters legend only grow with time. he will be viewed favourably in time, probably TOO favourably.
