Calzaghe the best super-middleweight fighter ever! Does he need to fight on? NO!

The guy sure does get alot of hate around here. He could have retired after the Kessler fight and I would have given him his proper respect. Sure he's an opportunist but towards the end of his career he notched some very good wins. Remember, he was the one who ruined Lacy. The Kessler win was truly special regardless of what most people are inclined to think and what Hopkins did to Pavlik makes Joe's win over Bernard look that much better. Hell, even the Bika win doesn't look half bad these days. The Jones win means nothing as Roy has been shot for a few years now. In any event, if Joe retires I wish him luck. I was a big critic of his for a long time but he made me a believer the last few years.

As much as I criticised Calzaghe, it's heart breaking to see people say "Good riddance" and "No one will give a **** in the long run". There's a line between criticism and just pure ignorance in my opinion and I admit I don't like Calzaghe.

I've been pondering this for quite some time...is it because we have no genuine up and comers, or are the aforementioned boring old farts clinging?
    Probably a bit of both.

I don't think so. Joe beat him and I thought soundly enough. The scoring was warranted. Bernard does not deserve a rematch. Betting Pavlik is good but let's face it, it was not Joe Calzaghe. Joe beat Jones and Hopkins. Pretty good way to end a career.

you people are idiots. Who apart from dawson is there to fight? Hopkins?? please..is that the best you yanks can come up with? a 43 year old man whom he has already beaten?

He has beaten everyone there is to beat. As for him being like sven ottke, what a load of bollocks. Remember, calzaghe was a raw 25 year old kid and went in to the ring with Eubank and beat him. He was set to fight steve collins and collins retired. He has beaten everyone that stood in front of him.

you americans make me laugh, "oh lacy will kill him" so he beats lacy...then its.."well fight kessler then..so he beats kessler, then its "oh he's scared of pavlik" and then pavlik gets BATTERED by the man joe beat. What more do you want from the guy? so he had an easy payday against a washed up jones.? so what!!

Wow, after all the years and defences he made, dosent he deserve it?? Jones himself fought loads of **** fighters throughout his career. If calzaghe was american you wankers would be lauding him as the second coming of christ.

There is no comparison between Jones competition level and Calzaghes shitty collection of bums, no comparison at all.

Sad day for me if true, but if there's anything this sport's history has taught us, it's to take boxing retirements with a grain of salt. I'd still be slightly surprised if he bowed out without one more fight closer to home as a sendoff.

Props on a hell of a career if he does indeed hang 'em up for good.
