I had Hagler beating Leonard 7-5, and I've seen the fight countless times. I thought *at worst* it could have been a draw, but even then, that would have been a bad decision.. but Leonard winning? no way.

Marvin was a great fighter, but I think what hurts him is that he never moved up in weight and tested his skills against guys who he was not physically stronger than. He never took the chance against Spinks or Qawi. In my mind had he beaten either of those guys as dominantly as he did his opponents at middleweight then I would have been impressed more on an ATG scale. I think Hearns proved more in his whole career than Hagler did, but since Tommy lost to Marvin it is hard to rate him over Marvin. Marvin always called out the smaller guys like Duran and Hearns and Leonard. He did fight them all at middleweight I give him credit, but greatness is limited when a guy does not move up in weight. He did do all he could at middleweight. I just think he could have gone up a notch in ATG's by taking a chance and risking his legacy by taking on heavier guys.

as middleweight he was almost unbeatable from 1982-1985, but as far as ATG I wish he would have taken on Spinks. A win over Michael would have been impressive. I know everyone says well Michael was too big, well that is why the challenge and a win over Michael would have been so impressive. That is why they call it a challenge. Hearns and Leonard and Duran took those challenges, and Hearns and Duran lost sometimes because of it. But I do not think it hurt their legacy that bad.

You guys talking about him moving up are forgetting about the fact that those divisions didn't even matter then...some of you think nobody cares now, sh*t back then middleweight was where it was at. Being MiddleWeight Champion of the World meant something really big, and he dominated in that position for a long time.

Moving up in those days would have been like selling your large house to move to a studio appartment just so you can say you lived there.

    HAGLER is KING

Hagler called out all the welterweights. Leonard,Hearns,Benitez,Duran. He wanted them all to move up and fight him and he would get angry when they would not fight him immediately. Spinks called out Hagler the same way Marvin called out the other guys and Marvin never considered it. Moving up in those years did happen. Arguello did it. Hearns did it. Duran. I do believe that a great fighter goes up a notch by beating guys who are bigger. Hagler was great no doubt, but he did not try it out, and Spinks was there and wanted Marvin.

Seriously, who the **** is Spinks when it comes to ATG status vs, Marvin...???

No disrespect to Spinks, but this is far from a cloud over Marvin's resume, or even a minor asterisk.

I'm not saying moving up past middle never happened, I'm saying it didn't matter...LHW Tommy Hearns was obviously just way beyond making welter, as is the case with many moving beyond middle weight...they usually can't make the weight anymore.

Well Hagler would have had to fight Spinks to make an impact as a multi-titlest and it would have really helped his ATG legacy- especially after calling out the guys who were smaller than him. -Yes, Marvin has a great legacy already, but then again he would have had to do it before Spinks moved up to fight Holmes. Hagler vs. Hearns at lightheavyweight would have been ok, but really Hearns and Hagler were from the same divisions and they fought the same guys, so it would not have been the same challenge as fighting a real solid light heavyweight which Spinks would have been. Hearns was just as great as Spinks, but Spinks was a solid guy at 175. Would have been interesting to see Hagler fight a guy stronger than him and taller and see if he could do it. He might have. Hagler vs. Andries would have been interesting. I think Marvin would have won a decision.
As for Spinks, Spinks would have been a nice win for Marvin and Michael was a solid champ at 175. As great as Marvin at 160? No, Marvin was a greater middleweight than Spinks was at 175-which will get some people angry. But Spinks did move up and fight Holmes and won which always adds to the legacy. My point here is- I am saying it was good for Marvin to call out all of his buddies Hearns,Duran and Leonard, so why couldn't he give Spinks the same respect as those 3 gave him by fighting him?

I agree with you on that. Marvin never had trouble making weight. For Duran wasn't he 157? And he was strong at the weight. Probably the strongest middleweight we have had in the past 40 years, which helped him take a punch. He had a 75 inch reach also, which is what a man who is 6-1 or 6-2 has. Hearns had a 78 inch reach, which was equal to a man who was 6-3or 4. So incidentally, both Hagler and Hearns had reaches longer than their height would normally have.

Hagler never went up the weights and fought bigger men. He deserves all the respect in the world for what he achieved, he was an amazing fighter and a true ATG legend. But I don't think he deserves more credit than someone like Duran or Hearns who went up the weights and fought naturally bigger men. That's a risk Hagler never took. Maybe his body wasn't cut out for it, yep fair enough, but he still doesn't deserve more credit than men who could and did do it.
