Holmes/Cobb: Your thoughts

Should never been allowed as a title defense. Nobody was picking Cobb and nobody thought he had any chance of winning. Cobb had tried to face Weaver in a title shot and Weaver had that knee problem and was out awhile. Not many thought Tex had much of a shot in that one, let alone Holmes. Everyone knew Holmes would jab the guy to death and all Cobb could do was plod after him. Nobody thought Holmes was going to get hit by the guy and it was a mismatch.

 

They would of probably stopped a fight like that these days.

I mean it wasnt that long ago but it was no Calzaghe-Manfredo thats for sure.

Fight should have been stopped ,Cobb did not win a round and had little power so no chance of a ko from him ,superiority had been overwhelmingly established in Holmes' favour so the fight should have been halted imo.

If I recall correctly, the best Cobb did was a 10-10 round on 1 scorecard.

 

No reason to stop a fight if the fighter WANTS to continue and shows no signs of wear or distress.

Some fighters live off of that toughness and are capable of it. Why take away their best chance of winning, simply because other fighters are less durable and can't take such abuse?

 

I make it a practice not to reply to your posts as a rule ,but just this once I'll say this ,a boxing contest is held to decide the superiority of one individual over another [read the referees guide to fights], when one contestant has no conceivable chance of winning a fight should be ,and usually is ,terminated,Cobb did not take a round against Holmes ,was never in a position to trouble him and had zero chance of landing a turn -around big punch ,[ he did not possess one].The fact that a fighter may be able to soak up tremendous amounts of one- sided punishment is neither here nor there. A referees job is primarily to protect the fighters, sometimes from themselves .Cobb may have protested bitterly if the fight had been stopped but that is not the referees problem ,a boxing contest is ,or should be just that a contest ,when it no longer ceases to be competitve it should be stopped.There are enough ex fighters around ,showing the effects of taking too many punches,without adding to them.A brave man may be upset that a referee has stopped a fight ,and rescued him from taking a prolonged beating ,,later in life ,when he can still count his pay packet and recognize his family and friends he may look at things a little differently. If boxing was to be conducted as you want, it would be more suitably sited in the Collisseum in Rome.

 

That's the thing Mcvey, you never know who has a chance in one fight or another until the fight is actually DONE. That's why you have 12 rounds to work, especially if your durability is your selling point.

Andrae is a modern day iron chinned fighter. He lost all 12 rounds against Kessler and took unbelievable punishment but never looked bothered by anything thrown his way.

But in the final round of his last fight against Bute he had him down and by all rights knocked him out. What if that fight had been stopped simply because he was being dissected in a similar fashion to a previous losing effort?

 

The fight was 15 rds, and the score cards were 149-136 ,150-135,150-135. Cobb took a fearful pointless beating. I cant explain or rationalise my opinion any better , and don't feel inclined to try .

Boxing history is full of countless come from behind victories which prove the point, late knockouts scored after a fighter taking moderate to life threatening beatings. Some of the most important fights in boxing history.

Ali/Foreman. Jeffries/Corbett I. Johnson/Willard. Marciano/Charles with his destroyed nose.

Heart and toughness are a facet of boxing. Why not let a fighter who wants to exhibit it?

You can lay down in the ring any time you'd like, but true fighters stand above the pack by NOT doing so against all odds.

 

Also, Corbett/Jeffries was 23 rounds when it ended, Willard/Johnson 26, making a 15 round beating that Cobb willingly stuck around for pale in comparison.

Gosh durn, those fights should have been stopped because one guy was getting the crap beaten out of him, right?

 

Holmes was a brilliant fighter with great skill

Cobb had incredible durability and heart

Holmes could hit quite hard but lacked huge power

Cosell was a raving lunatic

 

I enjoyed listening to Cosell though,

I urge you to watch or rewatch, Foreman vs Lyle. Its hilarious with Ken Norton sitting ringside. Cosell continuously repeats - " And here is George Foreman folks, the man who beat Ken Norton sitting next to me today. Yes, that's right, Ken Norton. George Foreman beat him. "

I thought Norton was going to knock the ear phones right off his head.
