Not protected in terms of opposition, no, but in terms of environment very much so. Nothing has ever been far from his comfort zone. You hardly ever see hyped young American fighters doing anything along the lines of David Haye challenging Mormeck in Paris, or Mikkel Kessler going to Australia to fight Mundine and Cardiff to fight Calzaghe. There are exceptions (Tim Bradley for example) but they are of the distinctly non-hyped variety. Look at Dawson's reaction when Diaconu won the purse bid for their. Sheer incredulity that he should have to go to Romania. But that would have been an invaluable learning experience for him (and he would have won the fight, made more money than any previous fight and still been able to fight Tarver who wasn't going anywhere). Can we imagine Kelly Pavlik manning it up like Kessler and going to fight a unification fight against Abraham in Germany? It's unthinkable. But, logically, there's no reason why that should not be. A fight between the two in Germany would be a much bigger event than in the US, attract a much bigger crowd and a TV viewing figure that would dwarf what it would get in the US.
I don't doubt Froch would pack his bags if there was no other option. He hasn't done yet because there has been no fight big enough to warrant it. My real issue here is with Taylor. This would be the second time he's turned down a title shot/final eliminator because he might have to get his passport out, in favour of hiding in the States and being a stay at home.
Exactly and european fighters are abused for doing the same , even though boxing is back on the rise in europe while its dying on its arse in the states ( mega fights like last week aside ! ). Its bollox !
Exactly in Europe you have the Klitschkos , Kessler , Hatton , Calzaghe and others with huge fan bases filling stadiums left and right but America is still supposed to be the home of boxing when they can't get 5000 people to fill a ****ing casino Ludicrous !
Its all about HBO and the fact that Amerika is the promised land for boxers. Filled stadiums or not - you will make more money fighting in the states than anywhere else in the world. No doubt HBO would put more money in a fight if it took place in Amerika. Its not arrogance its pure Buisness end of story.
I've no idea whether that's actually true or not, but there's not a lot of logic in it. If you're showing an event on TV then, by definition it makes absolutely no difference where it comes from. As long as you can maintain your schedule times (and as we have seen it is possible to do this) then it makes no difference. I suspect partly it's myth. Hatton v Pacquiao, for example would not rely greatly on US TV revenue, the British PPV market is probably bigger in absolute numbers for that fight. I suspect that Abraham v Pavlik could make as much in Germany as it could in the US, especially if still scheduled to hit near US primetime.
With Taylor's low hanging left and Froch's low hanging left this would be a battle of who can take the most right hands. Taylor's speed vs Froch's power. I don't care where the fight has to be made. American's like to stay at home more than anyone else in the world, but if hbo is going to pay Froch a pretty penny for fighting in Arkansas then he should.
sven ottke earnt $10,000,000 a year fighting in germany with HBO nowhere near to be seen D/M the same give me your best guess how much sven ottke would have got for fighting echolls/brewer/lacy/an american 168 fighter you care to name in america on HBO ? echolls was americas top ranked 168 fighter around 2000/1 calzaghe got more for fighting kessler than he did roy jones and HBO were not involved in that deal until the contracts were done and dusted and HBO put in a tender to show the fight. they put in 15% of the purse. there is a heavyweight title fight this weekend, with an american taking part , yet it pays more outside of america. mundine earns fortunes fighting in australia-where is HBO. biggest money in heavys is in europe. biggest money in cruisers is in europe biggest money at light heavy is in europe. biggest money at 168 is in europe or canada biggest money at 160 is jointly germany and america biggest money at 154 currently is not a lot biggest money at welter is in america biggest money at 140 is in europe ZDF/ARD/SKY are all equal to HBO HBO putting on PPV even average fights is killing its own boxing audience. HBO are showing the old men of boxing, but doing this have not built a fanbase for rising stars. and these old men will be virtually all gone by 2009 end holyfield/toney/jones/hopkins/wright/forrest/mosely/dlh/tarver/ CBS/ABC/NBC/ all need to get involved in boxing soon, because HBO`s policy is leading to and soon will be at the stage of diminishing returns.
Taylor is in a position where he can fight who he wants. Froch for a title, Bute for a title, Kessler for a title, and these are just a few names he can chose from. If he choses Froch, he will chose where the fight takes place. If Froch doesn't want to fly to USA, Froch will just chose another way. Period. Forget about all other considerations, Europe-USA, HBO-SKY, big stadiums vs casinos. Taylor is the one who choses. Anyway, if both want to fight and don't agree, they will go on purse bid and we'll know then where the money is.
Again, Hennessy would likely win a purse bid. DiBella already said that the fight is more profitable in the UK than the US.
Taylor has already ducked Froch when he could have fought him for the WBC instead of Pascal, but he opted to fight Lacy instead for no title AND less money!! Froch has plenty of possibilities.....Kessler,Pavilk,Abraham,Bute,Berrio,maybe even Calzaghe. It's not as if Taylor is the only guy Froch can make a few quid fighting. My guess is that Froch will make a voluntary defence against a fringe contender followed by a big money fight with one of the above, maybe even Taylor if he grows some balls and comes to the UK
If I was an American boxing fan, that would have been one of the most depressing things I ever read.If thats mostly true then the final excuse for American fighters to fight only in America is completely gone.
To all those North Americans who think that foreign fighters get poor decisions in the UK.....THEY DON'T. We aren't like Germany or Italy. And remember, in recent fights, both Hatton and Calzaghe have travelled to America, to fight American fighters, with American referees, AND American judges. That doesn't happen here or anywhere else for that matter in world title fights
Think showing venues like this in the US MIGHT help the sport? :huh Soccer is slowly catching on here.....
