someone please educate me.. i dont hate the guy. i dont mind him as a fighter and he seems a good bloke but i just dont get it? the way i see it hes a great wrestler but who has he beaten? belfort, (good win) ortiz (good win), sylvia (fedor smashed him in 30 seconds) and chuck ( luckiest and most overrated fighter in mma but thats another story) his record is littered with losses, he doesnt have great striking and he has a suspect chin.. yet people talk about him as though hes the king of the sport... someone please explain...
He beat Belfort when he was supposed to lose. He beat Chuck when he was supposed to lose. He beat Ortiz when he was supposed to lose. He wasn't supposed to beat Sylvia either. Also, he has fought at the top level of MMA well into his 40s.
Two time Heavyweight champion despite being one of the smaller Heavies, beating top HW's of the time like Kevin Randleman and Pedro Rizzo (twice). Came back when thought to be done to win the LHW title over Chuck in dominating fashion, followed by Tito in similar dominating form. Multiple wins over Vitor Belfort, again dominant wins at that (most of these wins coming when he was the underdog). Came back AGAIN to fight for the Heavyweight title when thought to be completely shot and given almost no chance against the much larger Sylvia. AGAIN won in dominant fashion, only to defend his title against a guy thought to be the next big thing in the division, and win in dominating fashion, once again as the underdog. Yes he has a fair number of losses, but a lot of that can be attributed to the extremely high level of competition he faced, most of it against significantly larger men. Or simply early career losses. He was a great fighter and an MMA legend, no question.
pretty much every fight he been involved in he was an underdog, he did well in MMA when everyone said he was too old, he finds a way to win with his heart and determination when it looks like he is going to loose, he has been reserve for the Olymipc wrestling team 3 times and never gave up. people like him because he is inspiring character and a pionerr for MMA.
I agree that he's overrated as a fighter. But I think what makes him unique is that he defies his age and continues to suprise people.
its just because like all of his wins are upset wins. he wasnt suppose to beat vitor any of the times he did he wasnt suppose to beat rizzo chuck tito GG tim so all of his big wins are upset. he was the first one to utilize greco effectivly. altho imo he is overrated. the guy just gets title shots every time never had to earn them. he also has a record of 16 and 9 that to me shows he wasnt that great. still hes ****ing randy couture hes a legend.
Aside what everyone else has said. Did couture put up more of a fight than Frank or Heath. If so, there is something to be said of that. They are real heavies and not at the top of the game but far from slouches, IMHO
its all subjective i mean randy is the only fighter to have so many titles and world titles of a major org as well he was undersized in his hw division and continued to win. he reinvented his self and pioneered the game plan. i wouldnt say he is a god that title is left for fedor however i would say he is a clear pioneer of the sport and is truly a legend in his time. i just hope that he retires now and wont tarnish his already stellar resume
Randy is not a legend because of his won/loss record. He's a legend because of who he's fought, how he has fought them, and the fact that he was the top dog in the HW division in the UFC well into his 40's. I give him all the credit in the world.
