Dempsey vs Willard - Glove Size?

BIG DEE HERE=They were 6oz gloves so they were for the real men not pussys. Damn those really had to hurt.

 

Gloves prior to 1930 were really obscure and primitive..... By the 30's, Everlast had developed an 8oz. glove and a 10oz. glove that was made of some form of quality.... Gloves have continued to improve over the years... Basically, gloves have been good for the last 78 years or so..... The **** that "Johnson & Dempsey" had to wear, was bad / obscure....

Plus, early fighters did NOT wrap or tape their hands / paws with all the bandage and medical tape like they do now....... Today's heavies would NOT be able to fit into them old gloves of 6 ounces.....

The 5-ounce Sol Levinson gloves used by Dempsey and Willard in Toledo.
Of course the argument cuts both ways. Dempsey himself had to take shots from superheavyweights with those same 5oz gloves.

 

Still plenty of room to hide a few nuts and bolts in..

 

Is there actualy any recorded incidence of sombody sucesfully using a metal bolt to load a glove.

There are a number of active fighters who could have had sucesfull careers in that period but Calzaghe is not one of them.

Quite apart from the hand injuries he sustained he would have been forced to take fights before his hands healed properly.

 

Actually his slapping protects his hands, it'd do it with any glove.

Before this fight Dempsey had broken Fred Fultons jaw, so it was not as if he had not been doing considerable damage beforehand.

He broke a few jaws wearing 16 oz sparring gloves as well.

 

Yes but when he did break his hand he would have to fight again before it had healed.

He would loose to a nobody, probably make the injury worse and then loose to another nobody.

Eventualy he would be busted down to journeyman level.
