Who has the greatest legacy, Buster Douglas or Joe Calzaghe?

Calzaghe, and it's not even close unless you consider a legacy being one wonderful win followed by a pitiful showing where he didn't even bother to get in shape against Holyfield.

There's a difference between a legacy and a footnote. Douglas is a footnote whose only historical significance is proving the "every dog has his day" theory. Once he was on top, he fell right back down to what he always was.

I will admit that I hate Joe Calzaghe. He is boring. He slaps. He tries to sell his fights by humping a 43 year old man like a ******. He then tries to Roy Jones a 38 year old Roy Jones. The problem is that it doesn't work. He comes off looking more the clown than the guys he is trying to clown.

That being said, how the hell could anyone vote for Douglas? Tyson was not Tyson that night. Was it an exciting fight? Hell yes. Does Douglas get credit for not shitting himself like Spinks? Hell yes. Does Douglas have a legacy? **** no. He has one win over the presumed "baddest man on the planet".

 

He was way past his best by then yes. If you dont know that your aint a fan of boxing. D'Amato was dead, Rooney gone, his marriage was ****ed, he was getting in the newspapers for all sorts of incidets, he wasnt training.... in short he had gone off the rails big time. Just look at his physique in the Douglas fight and compare to his fights just a year before it was plain to see he wasnt keeping in shape.

Almost killed Rudock twice? Dont you mean had a premature stoppage once and went life and death once with Ruddock... the same Ruddock that Lewis anihilated in 2?

 

Calzaghe easy, this is a no brainer, yea Tyson was the bigger achievement, but he achieved **** all other than that, he didnt even hold onto his title for a year or get a succesful defense of the title, if Douglas is ahead of Calzaghe then so should Rahman.

 

This thread is hilarious. The fact that some people are actually seriously debating this topic makes it that much better.

 

Buster Douglas will be remembered as the guy who walked the valley of death & came back dragging the beast.

Calzaghe is 46-0, and a first ballot Hall of Famer who beat fellow Hall of Famers Roy Jones and Bernard Hopkins (in the U.S. when Hopkins was #3 p4p). Add victories over Kessler, Eubanks, Lacy, Reid, Sheika, Mitchell, Brewer and others and that is a great career.

Don't forget that Joe is not officially done yet either. He may yet fight (and beat) Dawson.

On the subject of Buster Douglas, why didn't Joe ever meet his Buster Douglas or Oliver McCall (both considered journeymen before they beat Tyson and Lewis)? Ask Lewis and Tyson (and Leonard and Hagler) how hard it is to go undefeated.

If Joe fights Dawson we can go ask Valuev about how hard it is to go undefeated. That's the more logical equivalent. Why bother two elite fighters like Lewis and Tyson? Did they get a dodgy close decision against Eubank and then successfully fight no one until the the final couple years of their careers?
