He should be ok, it's not like there's another Hopkins out there at middleweight. Paul Williams and Abraham are certainly capable of beating him, but I don't expect anyone else to do what Hopkins did to him anytime soon.
The problem with Pavlik is that with his defeat, his biggest flaws were exposed, and I dont know if he has the natural athletic talent to over come them when he gets in there with top level fighters. Make no mistake about it, every fighter he faces from here on out will look at the hopkins fight, and attempt to do the same things to Pavlik as Bhop did. On the positive for Pavlik, everyone he faces wont have Bhops ability to execute that gameplan.
Pavlik needs to get comfortable at either 168 or 175 (whichever he chooses) by fighting a few fringe contender types. I don't like him going back down to 160. How many guys have we seen get dropped upon going back down to a lower weight class? He will more than likely beat Rubio, but needs to be careful because if there is one thing Rubio can do, it is punch. I think 168 would treat Pavlik well, there are plenty of big fights, and other than Kessler there is no one who has a decided advantage over Pavlik. BTW Pavlik would starch Williams
Abraham might be set for a move to 168 himself. 160 is total **** After Pavlik and Abraham, its a big step down to Sturm and Sylvester,,,, After them its like walking off a massive cliff.
So, whack his elbow a few weeks before the fight and give him bronchitis a few days before the fight? What's so hard about that? Other than he isn't likely to fight again under those conditions?
I have not personally seen any tape, but as the story goes, when KP was a young amature he was a slick boxer type. When he was about 16, the powered showed up, and his style changed drastically. As a youngster he won multiple national championships, and made it to the olympic trials when he was just 17 years old. His amature record stands at 89-9 at some very high levels of the sport. A simple 1-2 banger could not do that. I'd like to see KP use the Rubio fight as a relatively safe opportunity to get back to his roots, if he can still do it. I'd love to see him come out and stick and move; counterpunch off the back foot, box from a southpaw stance, et. Show me something I haven't seen. Blasting Rubio out in 5 or 6 rounds won't impress anybody. If all goes well for both guys, Pavlik/Abraham will happen in 2009. Both guys want it. Boxing politics, promoter bull****, and ridiculous mandatories have gotten in the way. It simply isn't Kelly or Arthur's fault. Both have clearly stated they won't move up without trying to unify. The only way Abraham beats Pavlik is by KO. If Pavlik gets knocked out by AA, he's probably finished as an elite level fighter. If KP stops Arthur, or dominates him to a solid UD, most people will put him back in their top 10 P4P. Pav's next 2 or 3 fights are VERY important.
Pavlik would have and would still fight, and defeat Paul Williams, and he would do it easily. I hope everyone disagrees so I can make money. I don't think Paul Williams or Dan Goosen really wanted, or really want now, that fight. PW takes way too many punches to even be competitive with Kelly. Pavlik is too big and strong for him. Please mark down this post or even better tell me I am full of it so I can mark yours down. :good
Good post, but it isn't likely that Dawson or Calzaghe could do what Hopkins did. You're watering down your own message here by trying to suggest that two fighters who's style in no way resembles Hopkins could do essentially the same thing.
