Joe Calzaghe told to an MMA site that boxing was fading and that MMA would be the next big sport in the world. Boxing has exist since centuries ago, how can he say that a sport that doesnt have even 15 years can beat boxing so easily... can you beleive this?

Eh, sort of sad to hear this from someone like him.

Weird though, because MMA it seems, is getting more and more popular.

I dont think he said that MMA's gonna totally eclipse boxing anytime soon.

Boxing is kinda fading from the mainstream.
MMA is becoming one of the fastest growing sports in the world.

MMA in its different forms has existed for centuries also.

    Dont overreact, man.

its the truth though, whether we like it or not. There is nothing like the level of boxing talent coming through from black america. Look at the heavyweight scene for the past 5 years. Dominated by Eastern European plodders. One american medal at the olympics. Boxing is an aquired taste - its more subtle than MMA, fights last longer, its not as immediately accessable to the casual fan. In top-level MMA you get more knockouts/stoppages, because there are more ways to get a ko/stoppage/submission.

Also there are relatively low numbers of active participants compared to boxing, so there are less closely matched fights. Less interesting for the hardened fan, but the casual observer sees a clear winner, often in dramatic fashion. MMA is hugely popular with young, white males, and is still gaining momentum. The racial and age demographic of MMA fighter is much closer to MMA fans than the same relationship in boxing. This, for me, will be the key factor in the growing popularity of MMA.
I dont mind a bit of MMA myself, but i love boxing. I can see the way things are headed though.

Well... thing is, hes kinda right.

In the US at least, MMA is more mainstream then boxing, and the future looks to be good for them as they continue making good buisness decisions and boxing continues its self lynching ways.

Wrestling is even older than boxing and used to be even bigger. People used to watch wrestling matches like DLH vs Pac. It eventually faded in prominence and now we have the "Pro-wrestling", college wrestling, and Olympic wrestling. Olympic style wrestling is popular world-wide, but not in the US. What's popular in the US is "Pro-wrestling". I imagine that US culture shifts a lot more than that of other countries.

Boxing is never gonna die, but it won't stay mainstream here in the US how it used to if the marketing strategies don't get better.

The day MMA takes over Boxing, is the day they find Jimmy Hoffa's body.

Boxing is fading but it isn't just because of MMA.

Boxing and Baseball were the two main sports in the USA just 50 years ago. Boxing is a fringe sport now. How many little kids want to be pro boxers now? I don't know many but they used to be all over.

I really believe boxing in the west died after Ali. He alienated 90% of the fan base with his constant berating of his opponents and his racist taunts. Mainstream America went off to other sports that they felt more connected to and it continues today.

MMA wont ever take it over because they have many of the same probs as boxing. no unified league.
    UFC is obviously the biggest
    WEC
    King of the Cage
    M-1
    Elite XE
and prob more, im no expert but there are quite a few MMA heavyweight champs and so fourth down to lightweights.... so with crap like this, no one can keep up with who the real MMA champ is, much like boxing who cant keep up with who the heavyweight champ is...wlad, vitali, valuev ect
